Saw the breaking news headline on NBC website a couple hours after the fact. Didn't feel a thing in Anchorage. After looking at the map, it was pretty far south-southeast of here.

Epic hype. Thats all it is and people are catching on. Since Catrina, people play it so damn safe, that its nothing more than crying wolf to the extreme just so noone can say that they weren't warned. The reports on the storm will evaporate faster than the light showers that it produces.

I was born and raised there. A 7.5 won't even wake the locals up.

Katrina? Before Katrina, people had tons of warnings. They didn't heed the warnings though.

It's not "epic hype" - they are life-saving warnings. The reality is, "there's a reasonable, though not 100% chance that this will cause a tsunami - the science at predicting tsunamis isn't flawless yet. But if it does create a tsunami, a lot of you who don't get out of the way will die."

Exactly.

Fucking idiot (obviously not you DrPizza). This isn't your local TV meteorologist coming up with some dumbass "____pocalypse" cutesy phrase to try to get through your numbskull that you might want to consider the weather in your plans and not be a jackass that tries to drive in blizzard/tornado/hurricane conditions and then wonder why you have to bail your car on the Chicago expressway.

God damn I hate people that whine about disaster stuff being hyped. These are the same shitheads that afterwards whine that not enough was done if the disaster actually happens.

Plus with warnings, its not like its any problem if it doesn't happen. Of all the shit to complain about...

A 7.6 magnitude quake is capable of kicking up a large tsunami wave. Or can become no threat of kicking up a tsunami wave, depending if the earthquake displacement is up ward and vertical or horizontal and sideways. As the latter type quakes are rarely tsunami threats

It was a vertical-thrust large earthquake capable of producing a large tsunami. It did produce one, albiet small.

Glad nothing major happened!

As the other variable may be if the vertical displacement is under land where it can move no water, or under sea, and shallow enough to displace a large pulse of water. Perhaps the greatest tsunami threat in the USA is 90 miles West Of Portland Oregon, and that long fault has seen no major activity since 1/1/1700. As studies of sediments in the low lying areas of Portland, OR shows that fault has gone off many times in the past 3000 years. Now we can provide decent warning to China, Hawaii, and Japan, but people in the low lying areas of Portland, OR will get 10 minutes at best. As Tsunami waves move at about 550 MPH over water. A ship in the deep Ocean will barely feel their passing, but when the sea depth shallows, near land, it keeps piling up up and up. As those pictures of the last Indonesian quake quite graphically showed.
