I have been having this problem for a while where I find the computer locked up and and an alarm is sounding (hi,low tone like a euro police siren) . I have had system temperature problems do to a bad powersupply which I have replaced with a spare . I have switched off cpu and m/b temp monitoring in the bios and the cpu temp is now around 40C (sysoftsandra) but the alarm will still sound on a regular basis. Any
idea what this alarm is for. I suspect there my be some damage to the cpu from the high temp and i had to reinstall Win ME to unscramble the hard drive but I am not sure what set off the alarm

What brand/model power supply are you using now? What are the rest of the system specs? You should also really consider upgrading to windows 2k or XP as ME is complete garbage.

The power supply is just a cheap 300 watt one that came with a computer case I bought several years ago. This problem was happening with the old power supply too (550 watt) before I removed it . I wonder if the cpu is just trashed from running @ 60C from the bad p/s.
AMD XP 1800

Well I think I may have found the source of my alarm problem. I was going to run Burn IN V3.0 and see if I could find out what the alarm is from and I pulled a stick of memory and when I booted the alarm started asap and no boot. I replaced the memory and pulled the other stick and it booted just fine . I am running Burn IN now and no alarms and no errors. Hopefully all I need now is replace the memory and every thing will be normal.
