Alan Dershowitz blasts Columbia Faculty

It's not often that a professor tells a packed crowd at Columbia University that Edward Said was a political extremist and that faculty members in the school's Middle East studies department encourage Islamic terrorism.

The professor who made those statements yesterday isn't from Columbia but from Harvard. Law professor Alan Dershowitz showed up at the intellectual home of Said, a literature professor who was a fierce critic of Israel, to rebuke Columbia's faculty and administration for tolerating an atmosphere on campus that he said promotes the hatred of Israel.

"This is the most unbalanced university that I have come across when it comes to all sides of the Middle East conflict being presented," Mr. Dershowitz told hundreds of students and a smattering of Columbia faculty members.

"I have never seen a university with as much faculty silence," he said.

Imagine spending a lot of hard money on an Ivy league education and getting a wacko, leftist professor. What a waste.

Sadly, many brainswashed kids buy into the nonsense promulgated buy our fine institutions of higher learning.

The whole point is to get exposed to new ideas. I don't know why you feel its a waste. Often students when presented with extremist views from either side are able to not only reafirm their won political idealogy but to better articulate why they feel that way. If columbia only has leftist wacko profs that's a bad thing, but they have there place in an instution of higher learning jus tlike the wacko conservative prof do. (and yes they're definately there. I've had my share of them)

Do you really need to spend 30 - 40K/yr to get exposed to "new ideas". You can go to the Anandtech forums and be exposed to liberal drivel for free.

If I'm spending that kind of money to send my kids to an ivy league school, I'm expecting them to learn something.

Come on, you're not still beating this dead horse are you?

Imagine actually looking at the realities of the situation:
[*]Columbia University is home to the most prestigious Center for Israel and Jewish Studies in the country.
[*]Columbia has six endowed chairs in Jewish Studies.
[*]Columbia is adding a 7th endowed chair in Jewish studies to answer cries for balance of their act of creating one endowed chair for Arab studies.
[*]Columbia offers 4 courses on the Israel/Palestine conflict; 3 are taught from a pro-Israel perspective, the other is an elective.

Columbia is unbalanced, but certainly not in the direction claimed above.

And they will learn something. I suspect that's not your problem, though. If they don't think like you then they're just plain stupid, right?

And comparing the Anandtech political forum to the discussions at an ivy league school is laughable at best.

My department chair had a good one today... He's paying me to go to school, so I can't complain too much though. "Well, the truth isn't alwasy appealing, whether you're talking about the war in Iraq or scale-up of tubular reactors" followed by something derogatory about anyone who thinks the war was a good idea. Of course, he's welcome to his opinion, but I'm curious as to what that has to do with "transport effects in reactor design," which is the name of the class.

Yeah sure Columbia is pro-Israel, sure man. All this doesn't mean that it is NOT pro-Islamic terrorists targeting Israel and America and other freedom loving countries. Its one of the most left leaning universities in America by far.

Its a school full of radical leftist elitist women who are hungry for power and brainwashing students. There are lefty male professors too, not leaving them out. Dershowitz is absolutely correct, I've been hearing of this for a while. Finally someone spoke out

So what? Why does freedom of speech not apply to Columbia? If the profs there want to have an opinion, they are very much entitled to it. If you don't like it, don't attend and don't send your children/siblings/ friends/ neighbors there. People who otherwise get rejected will appreciate the gesture.

No one whines about unsubstantiated "Islam" hating. God, give it a rest. Our government has a pro-israeli bias, and Dershowitz is bitching over a university?

Its not Islam hating, get your facts straight. Its being aware of Islamic terrorists and doing something about them. Maybe your the one with the hate since you associate regular Islamic people with terrorists

Islamic terrorists have declared war on us and other freedom loving people of the world, either you wake up and do something about it or be killed like a goat

I guess you can only laugh at the ivy league jokers who revel in their little hate-fests where they bash Israel and call for her elimination.

It ain't gonna happen.

Why do you hate US so much? Why are you denying Islamic terrorists exist? Why?

Probably a product of one of these "elite" liberal universities. They are so uptight and sophisticated they don't realize they hate America, they hate freedom. I'm not talking about the terrorists here, talking of the snotty women (and men) who brainwash these students. They are a leftover from the 70's.

These left wing lunatics go to the minority restaurants just so they could brag that they are better than you, that they are more "inclusive" and "tolerant" and "caring" than you simple minded, backwards right wingers.

If it were to these American haters, our borders would be erased (even more so than right now) and Islamic terrorists would be welcomed with open arms.

Remember this is the first time since 1928 Republicans have had this much control. Both in congress and in White House. This is historical.

Listen you left wingers, listen. Listen to the American people. They have turned their backs on you because you have taken a radical turn to the way left. You have alienated yourselves. Look the current trends, look how Bush's approval ratings are the highest in a year due to the success in Iraq. You can point out all the bad news in Iraq all you want, American people look at the positive events.

When you have yentertainers like Barbara Boxer as the most vocal democrat (along with Ted Kennedy), and Nancy Pelosi as the minority leader of the House, it's no wonder why the democratic party is slowly falling apart. Pathetic predictions like the mass amount of immigrants will vote for democrats were proven dead wrong.

It's like what my dad told me. He said "Son, when you go to university you encounter dreamers, people who push limits, creative thinkers. You'll end up supporting peace, love and liberalism, you'll want to change the world. Then you graduate get a job and spend half the year paying for these principles. You begin to think I worked hard for this, why should a bum on the street get it all. In the end you die a bitter old conservative, and your grandkids repeat the cycle using what's left of your life's savings so that they to can learn to be liberal."

(okay, okay so it was a poor attempt at sarcasm.)
