I would imagine illegal immigration is tough on the "workforce" of a place like alabama.

Ooooh, I see what you did there. That's a good one ;)

Doesn't matter, the legal workforce of Alabama should not have to compete against the illegal workforce.

From the article:
WILL STUDENTS BE AFRAID?

Alabama's law is unique in requiring public schools to determine, by review of birth certificates or sworn affidavits, the legal residency status of students.

"We fear that it will, in effect, ban the student through fear and harassment," said Shay Farley, legal director of Alabama Appleseed, a non-profit policy and legal advocacy organization.

Farley said there also is concern about the increased financial burden on schools to collect the information.

-----------------------

Why shouldn't the students be afraid? They should be afraid whether this law was in effect or not---THEY ARE ILLEGALLY here. If they were born here, then fine, they should get the education.

However, as the article states, there will be a financial burden on the schools to verify everyone's citizenship. It's the price that has to be paid to chase the illegals out of the country.

Of course it won't be any surprise to see the usual band of idiots lining up to fight those who support actually following the law.

How will making it a crime to knowingly give an illegal immigrant a ride "put thousands of Alabamians back to work" as Senator Beason claims? Is Greyhound going to have to demand birth certificates of all hispanic passengers?

Sure sounds to me like they are trying to legitimize every form of harassment and intimidation they can think of-in the best tradition of "Southern Justice."

It's illegal to drink and drive. However, I think MADD and the police are harassing way too many drunk drivers. Ya, they break the law but so what, they just want to get home after a fun night at the bar.

From the first paragraph of the article

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Alabama's governor on Thursday signed a tough new illegal immigration law that requires public schools to determine students' immigration status and makes it a crime to knowingly give an illegal immigrant a ride.

I believe they are talking about school buses.

Yes, that's it, take it to the extreme. Why should we bother doing anything to curb illegal immigration?

Because America's capitalist overlords won't have cheap labor to exploit. If there are less immigrants around, how will businesses keep pulling in insane profits?!?

Won't someone please think of the capitalists?!?!

Which part of "knowingly" is not clear to you? Greyhound doesn't know or need to know whether one of their riders is an illegal immigrant, so they have no issues. The law covers people who knowingly give an illegal immigrant a ride, it's basically just like aiding and abetting.

Sure sounds to me like they are trying to legitimize every form of harassment

If you consider <gasp> following the law to be a form of harassment.

This type of law isn't going to work. It's going to create more work for law enforcement, but it's not going to fix anything because it doesn't strike at the root cause of why illegals come here. Because they can get work. Until you start penalizing companies for hiring illegals, you can "crackdown" and deport as many of them as you want to. They're just going to come back.

And ultimately, that's precisely why government comes up with these stupid laws that won't actually improve things much. Because illegals are good for business and what's good for business is good for America.

I'm curious-does this new law do anything to crack down on the employment of illegal aliens? It's just like the drug wars-you have to do at least as much to reduce demand or all the efforts to reduce supply will be for naught.

This is an interesting approach. More based on the notion that the illegals will leave and at least not enter Alabama now. Nationally though, the Southwest is far too saturated to apply this.

Good for Alabama, but the nation will fail to follow.

Maybe it prevents people from picking up day laborers from Home Depot or Lowe's Parking lots?\

Edit: just read the article...it's part of the reason. :)

It is a major problem in Alabama. I bet if you polled the populous you'd find overwhelming support for tightening restrictions in this manner.

Alabama rednecks, get ready to pick cotton for subsistence wages. My Hanes better not go up in price. You can do with illegals what you want, but my 4 pair boxer briefs with bonus 5th pair better still be $10 when all is said and done :)

Texas is next; once the child is ID'ed as an illegal immigrant, the teacher is required to shoot said child in the face.
Ha, I support it
Then some bleeding heart liberal will say it's wrong to make other people have a bleeding heart as well. Typical liberal hypocrisy.
