al-Qaida-Linked Group Claims 4 Killings
By NADIA ABOU EL-MAGD, Associated Press Writer
2 hours ago

CAIRO, Egypt - An al-Qaida-linked group posted a Web video Sunday showing the killings of three Russian embassy workers abducted earlier this month in Iraq. A fourth also was said to have been killed.

An accompanying statement by the Mujahedeen Shura Council, an umbrella organization linking seven insurgent groups including al-Qaida in Iraq, said all four Russians were killed.

The video, posted on an Islamic Web site the frequently airs militant messages, showed the beheading of two blindfolded men and the shooting of a third. The footage was stamped with the logo of al-Qaida.

"God's verdict has been carried out on the Russian diplomats ... in revenge for the torture, killing and expulsion of our brothers and sisters by the infidel Russian government," the statement said.

Four Russian embassy workers were abducted June 3 after an attack on their car in Baghdad's Mansour neighborhood. A fifth Russian was killed in the incident.

The captives include the embassy's third secretary, Fyodor Zaitsev, and three other staffers: Rinat Agliulin, Anatoly Smirnov and Oleg Fedoseyev.

If this had happened before the fall of the USSR as a super power I'm thinking Russia would be right there next to us dealing with this situation. I never thought I would be sorry that the USSR changed to become what it is now. Still at this rate, it wouldn't surprise me if this doesn't eventually turn into WW III :(

I wonder what the response from Russia will be? I think in Russia they don't play around with stuff like that.

What saddens me most is that these beheadings are happening so much that I'm now a little de-sensitized to it. And that worries me. :(

to the victims. May their souls rest in peace and people evolve so that no one else should go through what they (and others) have gone through in these dark times.

Because, as opposed to what the Bush administration would have you believe, every muslim extremist is not tied to some huge group that has weekly meetings. Every group has it's own reasons and are mostly independant of each other. The Chechnians have some sort of wierd problem with Russian indiscrimatly killing civilians there. I don't get it personally.

I know there are at least 5 terrorist groups operating in Iraq, AQ is always pimped but it's a small part. I also know most iraqis hide and even give tacid support the holy warriors.

But I don't understand killiing Russians who vetoed Iraq and whohave been a long time ally of Iraq.

Hmm.. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Iraq is not the epicenter of Muslim Fundamentalist movement. Just Maybe.

Try 200 years. Al Qaeda may have been involved for about 10 years, but the conflict started way back in 18th century. Anyways, this is the standard excuse the terrorists use for killing these or that people.

Islamic cultures will never forgive Russia for that little invasion thing in Afghanistan a few years back.
Paybacks come slow.

Russia is a horrible country

Compare the way Russia and U.S fight wars, the U.S will look like angels.

Russia carpet bombed Chechnya and basically destroyed every building that was ever created inside there.

They did the same thing to Afghanistan.

Considering how it was Russian money that built all those buildings during the years USSR was pumping money into that region, I wouldn't say Russia is all that terrible. Chechnya is a medieval place in 21st century, similar to Afghanistan. A place like that cannot be allowed independence, because it will be a base for terrorists and a threat to world peace. Also, if Russia is so terrible, how come the vast majority of Chechen refugees don't flee to Turkey or Georgia, or Azerbajan, no, they flee to Russia.
Also, you need to consider the atrocities by the Chechens, the fact that when Russians left they allowed their country to be used as an AlQaeda base for attacks into other regions of Russia. And in case you forget, Chechens have killed thousands of Russian civilians both those who used to live in Chechnya and the rest of Russia.

russia is responsible for much of the trobles in the world today
china, north korea, much of the former mess in South America ,african dictators, all sort of "progressive" movements in the thirld world which later turned in blood baths.

Russia has an enormous unconfessed inferiority complex towards the West, communism just helped this pathological character explode all over the world;even today Russia is involved in countless conflicts and countries are prevented from regaining their territorial integrity:armenia, georgia, moldova, etc which by comparaison makes the US look good.

I don't understand why Chechnia? Russia is an ally of Iraq and Iran??? And Embassy workers? I mean Russia has Zero troops in Iraq and would never invade...

Because they are not "insurgants" or "freedom fighters" they are terrorists. Terrorists don't much care who they kill so long as they create as much havoc as possible and make the news.

Chechnya is just a convenient excuse.

Armenia wants Russia there and has great relations with Russia. Georgia is pissed off because Russian peacekeepers stopped it from massacring Abkhazians, and Russians have withdrawn bases from regions of Georgia other than those whose people want them there for protection. So all those regions you claim just want to regain their "territorial integrity" really just want Russia out so they can resume their ethnic cleansing, while the people of those regions want Russian peacekeepers there. Maybe you should fly to Abkhazia and ask them. It's the West that has this need to create conflict with Russia when there isn't one, because they have built this enormous cold war apparatus that has nothing to do. They should just move on, the Cold war is over, they can fight Russia if they want to, but ultimately they need Russia a lot more than Russia needs them. The same Georgia that insults Russia at every opportunity relies on Russia for pretty much all of its energy supplies.

This post is very educational and highlights the Muslim mindset Aimster claims to be moderate and maybe even an apostate but the roots are sewn.

Unlike in the western world where we go after the accused and seek justice retribution for his crimes as an individual, all peoples of a nation who offened islam are guilty and subject to the most horrific deaths.

Zebo - I think for the Chechan situation to draw it and try to connect what is going on there with Iraq doesn't make sense. Just because Russia veteos stuff pertaining to war on Iraq doesn't mean that the Chechans should be in the streets dancing. There might be some sympathy insofar as sharing the same relgion is concerned, but my guess is it is about as strong as the sympathy between any two European Powers despite the fact that the majority of the population most likely shared the Christian faith. They still have their own lives to consider, and as far as they are concerned their situation with Moscow (regardless of whose fault it is, I'm not interested in pointing the blame right now) is concerned it hasn't been that great for around two hundred years now...
