Al Qaeda May Be Plotting Holiday Attacks- in Europe

From CBS of all sources... not exactly a Republican leaning news source. Link
I thought all this talk about al-Qaeda and terrorism was just attempts to gain votes for the election.
I am SHOCKED that there could really be a threat out there.
Good thing Nanci Pelosi is in charge now. Other than saying that we are not in a war against terror and saying that "Iraq is not a war to win" I bet she has a great record in fighting terrorism.
Intelligence agencies have been warned that al Qaeda may be planning to attack air and rail travel in Europe in actions that may occur during the busy holiday travel season, CBS News has learned exclusively for a report to air on tonight?s CBS Evening News.
In separate interviews with Arab and other intelligence sources, CBS News has been told that the warnings come from interrogations of al Qaeda suspects who recently left Afghanistan and Pakistan.
?One suspect said plans for repeating the Heathrow attempt (a reference to the failed ?liquid bomb? plot interrupted in August) were all prepared. It is now a matter of taking action,? said one Arab official who asked not to be named because he is not authorized to speak to the media. ?Al Qaeda?s strategy appears to be raising the pressure in Europe.?
and
In a move that has been puzzling intelligence agencies, al Qaeda has been withdrawing well-trained Arab fighters from the mountains and battlefields of Afghanistan.
In detailed interviews with Arab diplomats, intelligence sources and Pakistani and western officials, Arab members have been leaving Afghanistan for the past six months while handing over its militant activities in Afghanistan to that country?s resurgent Taliban movement?
?We believe that today the Arabs are much more useful to bin Laden if they are deployed in their home countries, particularly in the Middle East, to target Western assets, Western interests. Because of that we have seen a shift in al Qaeda thinking and al Qaeda strategy in encouraging members to leave Afghanistan and Pakistan,? says Gunaratna.

BTW: The Pelosi thing was sarcasm. The last part I quoted is scary stuff. If they are taking experienced fighters and bringing them "home" it could turn ugly.
-Thanks to HotAir for the heads up on this article-

I am wondering... when did these "interviews" take place?
Something like this comes out 3 days after an election hmmmm
This certainly would have helped Republicans if it had come out before the election, call this a reverse October surprise.

Here's something that may be (but should not be) news to you...terrorists are ALWAYS plotting. And what keeps the plotting from turning into reality is varied and complicated, but when it comes down to Americans making the difference, it doesn't matter who's in office on whether or not internet Republicans are complaining enough...it's about what the people employed at our intelligence agencies and police and military forces do. Mostly because it's NOT political to them, like it is to virtually everyone else...yourself included. If it's not about politics, why is the bulk of your opinion on the topic composed of cheap shots at Nancy Pelosi? Good thing there are people out there who do take this stuff seriously...

Edit: That's not to say that we should all be wetting our pants here. Just remember, it's a lot easier to come up with an idea for a terrorist attack than it is to actually carry one out.

OK PEOPLE!!! Ignore my sarcasm and click on the link.

This is really bad news. What if some of these experienced terror fighters crossed the boarder?

Heck they don't even have to go that far to kill Americans.
Just bad news all around.
This war on terror is going to be around for a LONG time.

So, OP....you are saying we should all be scared, as usual? How is this any different than how scared we were yesterday?

This is the War of Fear.
Keep everybody afraid so they beg daddy to do whatever it takes to protect them.
The biggest perpetrators are in Wash. DC.
What we need are some sane moderates in DC to make decisions based on facts, take the advice of our generals, and whack the bad guys, rather than make this a perpetual war with endless monetary gains for some, and freedom losses for all.

Hello!!!! The elections are over, the Democrats won. If this was all about fear why keep pushing that fear?

And this is CBS news coming up with the story, not Bush and company pushing the story.

Hopefully we will not see any attacks. But the danger is still there. It will be interesting to see how Democrats react now that they have some power.

I just can't imagine going on a holiday and then attacking people. You're supposed to relax on your holiday.

So, you now finally admit that the war in Iraq has produced more terrorists? That pulling resources from Afganistan has allowed AQ to become so successful that they are free to export terrorism at a new level since the Taliban has seen a resurgence? That our "War on Terror" has been such a flop that the bad guys do not even need to concentrate their resources? That Bush's foreign policies are a dud for national security?

You say "Pelosi has a great record in fighting terrorism" in a way that assumes anyone else in power since 9/11 DID have a great record. Man, going into Iraq sure made the world a WHOLE lot safer, right PJ? I think this is you, buddy.

Their attitude is simple. The only terrorists they want to stop are the Republicans. Islam is their friend.

You know, if this is a "War on Terror", I think we're losing...cause a lot of you people certainly seem terrorized.
