I just feel compelled to post news that may be of interest to people in NY and DC.

Actually, it should be of interest to everyone.

I'd like to get an English version of Al-Jazeera on our cable system. It'd be like Comedy Central 2 :)

True, true. But somehow it seems more fitting to post current, important info, then some of the drival that hits OT on Saturday nite.

You mean all the threads about "sucky" roommates, arguments over which pop music is a "must download", best suicide options, how a certain broadband internet connection "rocks" yours...all of that isn't satisfying enough for you? :)

Well, on a more serious and hopefully constructive note I will say if the government has specific information or details about an attack they ought to release it wholesale. Why do I say that? Well it's pretty clear after the sniper shootings they're pretty ineffective at combating certain forms of terrorism.

Not to take away from the good work of law enforcement folks but it took an open, public announcement and the courage of some ordinary citizens to resolve the situation.

Condie Rice tells us we're important and she said something yesterday about us "sometimes and in many ways" being the first line of defense...it almost seemed hard for her to admit that, but it's true.

Many of the talk shows on al-Jazeera have on "jihadists" who encourgage the killing of Americans. It's mind-boggling the amount of hate the station spreads around the world.

Ummm.. How often do you watch Al Jazeera. (BTW, those of you with old sattelite dishes can watch it, and thier are a few webcasts) Al Jazeera is the biggest force for change in the Arab world. How many other Arab news outlets exist that broadcast uncensored news? How many other outlets are criticized for being pro-American and Pro-Israeli. How many other outlets have regularly had Israeli officials on as well as American officials???? They may be brodcasting from the Arab viewpoint, but it is kind of a stretch to say that they are spreading hate around the world.

Yes, they do interview officials from America and Israel from time to time. But it's not a secret that that the panels that they put together are always populated by jihadists.

What shows have you watched? What specific panelists are you talking about?

I have found Al Ittijah Al Mo'akis (The Opposite Direction) hosted by Faizal Al-Kasim interesting, but I need someone to translate for me most of the time.

I can't understand Arabic, so I have to rely on the descriptions I have heard from people like Dr. Walid Phares who has testified on Capitol Hill numerous times. Do you watch it?

A quick google search found this excellent article describing Al Jazeeras talk shows. I have seen a few of them, and I have not found them to be packed with Jihadists. I have been especially impressed by the fact that they bring in people from all sides of the issues such as an show I saw where they had a conservative Muslim women on debating the role and rights of women in Muslim countries with a very westernized Arab woman. (Edit, the conservative woman got pissed and walked off screaming something about infidels or some crap like that)

I have to state that yes I do watch Al Jazeera with some caveats. I don't speak Arabic, although I hope to begin classes in the Spring if I can finish my other masters this semester. Therefore, most of what I watch is talk shows with English speaking guests on which is not uncommon, although even some of the American and Israeli speakers end up speaking in Arabic. I also watch the newscasts on occassion although those are totally useless as they pretty much show the same information that CNN or MSNBC would show although they naturally tend to show more of the Arab side of things. But from watching quite a bit of this sort of thing, I see something on Al Jazeera that is very very uncommon in the Arab world. Differing viewpoints and a challenge to the statsus quo. If they have some very conservative anti-western speaker on, they will always #1 ask him hard questions, and #2 have someone more moderate or from a completely different side on. This is a far cry from spreading hatred and jihad.

I think Al Jazeera and things like it are the hope of the Arab world. Without free expression, thier can be no reform and modernaztion. Just because they don't agree with out views 100% and maybe present things from thier own viewpoints does not make them a fountain of hate. I don't think I have ever seen Whalid Pharis state that either and I have read a lot of his work.

I guess it's really the guests who are encouraging jihad--not the station. So I take back what I said. But yes, every once and a while they do have people on with very moderate views. I'm not disputing that. All I'm saying is that many of the guests have extremely radical views.

I have heard him numerous times over the past year refer to the jihadists on al-Jazeera.

Many of the guests on American talk shows have extremely radical views. Many of the guests on Israeli talk shows have even more radical right wing views. And, I think it is more than every once in a while that they have relative moderates on. I just hope that people can avoid automatically labeling and judging things without ever having actually looked into it.
