Well, that was nice of them to support Gore, but Gore does sound like a complete dufous if that is a correct quote.

The more I hear of these two candidates the more I wonder if we really need to scrap our educational system and start over with a new paradigm. Sheesh! Very scary.

Al Gore is a sperm burp. End of story.

God, I hope we get a decent president one of these days. Although, no one can be worse that Clinton. :)

I wish it was from a more credible source than The Register, but at least they got one thing right. Gore never claimed he "invented" the Internet. If that's what you believe, it's time to get over it.

What is true is that he was one of those in Congress who took the initiative in getting it funded and implemented. Of course, most of us recognize the importance of the web. We wouldn't be posting here, today, without it. Regardless of whether you are for or against him for president, if Gore was able to pound a little recoginition of that into the thick skulls on both sides of the legislative aisle, I think we all owe him a debt of gratitude for that.

The candidates are simply figureheads. You must extend your focus to both major parties. Only then can you properly ridicule the right people for totally screwing up education in America. ;)

Well said. We do take this tool for granted, don't we?

Sadly it will not influence those who have made up thier mind, but those that doubted the republican assertions that 'He (Gore) claims he invented the internet" can at least see from this link the truth of what he did do,and the vindictive nature of his opponents.

No wonder so many are going independant or third party. Dems and Rep's are always putting out half truths and out and out lies at times to garner favor. It backfires every time.

No doubt, this should and will backfire on the "conservitive right wing extremests", but it won't change them at all. Sad.:(

"No other elected official, to our knowledge, has made a greater contribution over a longer period of time."

Uh, no sh!t. About the only thing a politician could do is hobble "the internet". Guess we should thank him for NOT putting up roadblocks. Gee thanks...

Yep, no biggie to "support" the internet. Now let's see what he can do about the taxation of internet sales. Unfortunately, politicians from both sides of the isle have their eyes on that pot of loot. There's a moratorium now, but there will come a day of reckoning. I heard California is chomping at the bit right now.

I'm dead set against it, but gosh, where will the funding come from for all the marvelous programs that everybody wants? Perhaps we should just stay pat and leave things as they are. We're living without the money just fine now...

Good point! Taxing the internet will close my business the first day it is implimented.

Warning!! Utah Governor Mike Leavitt(R) is head of the Governors association,a powerful lobby group and is spearheading the intititive to tax the internet. Had a moritorium not beemn implemented,All Utah busineess on the net would have been the first to feel this heavy handed approach.
To circumvent the 'Moritorium,he has devised a tax plan that taxes the ISP's for connecting to the backbone BY THE MILE/PER LINE. It has been reported he wants $500 per linear mile of cable. That means my ISP would have to pay something like $150,000/per line and he has 6, so, close to $1,000,000 just for this ISP alone. Obviously the consumer pays or the business folds.

This is why the hair on the back of my neck stands straight up when I hear Bush say give the gov't back to the states. Or when Republicans say Democrates are Tax and Spend.

time for a reality check.:disgust:

Ornery,

that issue should not be the "taxation of the internet", it should be "the elimination of non-internet sales and other lame taxes". The problem is fairness. The solution is not to add to the government's wealth but to increase the public's wealth by eliminating bad taxes.

This really is leading us into socialism, isn't it? The federal government is very eager to steal from the internet economy, and right now only the big business lobby and bribes are preventing it from doing so (that plus we're so close to a transition of "power").

Somehow I doubt the democrats will do the right thing here. The republicans just might, however. Independents and Libertarians, of course, would do what's best for Amercian citizens, but they're still up and coming.

For kicks and giggles I just went to http://www.issues2000.org/ to find out where some candidates stand on internet taxes. Here goes:

George Bush Sr.:
"I applaud the House of Representatives for extending the moratorium on Internet taxation for five years. This is a reasonable approach that I have consistently supported. This legislation will provide time to analyze the full impact of e-commerce and ensure that the rapid growth of the Internet is not slowed by new taxes. I also support a permanent ban on all Internet access taxes & hope that the House will ban these taxes so that the Internet is more affordable and more accessible for all Americans."

Harry Browne:
"agrees that regulation of the Internet should not in any way controlled by the federal government."

Al Gore:
"Ideally, it should be tax-free. But in the real world, we cannot ignore the fact that our democracy thrives in a federal system in which state and local governments derive one-third of their revenue from sales taxes. Put yourself in the position of governors and mayors. I do not think that we can just stiff them as they contemplate a potential fiscal catastrophe [from the loss of sales taxes]."

Choose your poison. ;)

Harvey: Not "invented", but "created".

Here's the supposedly exact quote:

"During my service in the United States Congress I took the initiative in creating the Internet."

Gore didn't create the internet any more than Santa Claus invented Christmas. He helped in the facilitation, implementation and funding of the internet. That's very different, though not unimportant.

Neither of these candidates seems to be able to utter a cogent sentence.

JellyBaby: He, he, you are such a cynical b*stard. :p

I edited this in my post above, but you guys were too quick, so I added it down here:

They skimmed right over this beauty, "He was and is a strong proponent of extending access to the network to schools and libraries. Today, approximately 95% of our nation's schools are on the Internet." Can I see a show of hands of who can read between the lines on that statement? Here's a clue, the Gore Tax on your Phone Bill...

My second phone line costs me $13.90 per month with NO long distance access on it. That's why it's so cheap. But, Gore's tax adds another $5.50 to it! Excuse me while I curse that worm for a few minutes...

...OK, I feel a little better, but son of a mofo bitch! I still have to pay another $3.50 for more of the same tax on my primary phone line! :|

And it is truly going to suck if we have to pay tax on internet sales. Man, having no tax really sweetens the pot on those free shipping "Hot Deals"!

I thought the only ones with authority to levie taxes was congress?

Isn't congress controlled by Republicans now?

I have real problems accepting the federal guarentee to the phone companies of a 12% rate of return on thier investments, but the feds allow it and this along with a bunch of others are embeeded in your phone bill. I suppose without those narly taxes we all pay at the peril of not being able to communicate, are contributing a great deal to the surplus, cuz my telephone service sure hasn't got better ever! It's worse now than at any time in history. US WORST (now QWEST) flat closed there offices in this community of 100,000 and try and provide service from 300 miles away.
I wont get DSL service until there is another 100,000 people here. Sheesh.;)

Damn, I figured most people would have clicked that link, but since not, I'll just paste the important part below:

  • According to a House Commerce Committee statement last year, "The FCC, with the support of Vice President Gore, went beyond Congress' intent. As a result, millions of Americans who pay the bills for more than 160 million phone lines -- including single, working mothers and people on fixed incomes -- will pay more for service each month."

Despite similar criticism from Senate Commerce Committee members during the FCC's oversight hearings on May 25, the FCC voted a mere two days later to INCREASE this illegal tax. The vote was 3-2, on purely partisan lines with all three Democrats voting in favor.

This is despite the fact that last year the General Accounting Office reported that the government corporation which administers the Gore Tax was created illegally -- and the fact that Congress has NEVER authorized the tax itself, much less the increase just imposed by the FCC.

Ornery:

Sheesh! I thought you were giving us facts. If the Republican Congress said it then it is demonstrably FALSE. What a bunch of lying curs. I wouldn't believe that bunch of idiots, particularly on the House side, even if it was a ten cent bet. Anyway, Congress can pass a bill any day of the week to curtail the FCC's authority. But why do that when you blame a tax on the Democrats instead? More of the same Washington bullsh*t.

This is exactly why we needed John McCain as President. He might have had a remote chance of cleaning this crap out of the national sewer on the Potomac.

Excuse me! Whose tax was this? If certain tax and spenders would quit taxing and spending... gads! How ridiculous!

This is like blaming the victim of a purse snatching for not keeping her purse under her coat. Or the victim of rape for wearing slutty clothes. Yeah, that's more like it. We get raped by Gore and company and somehow we're to blame!
