I just got this TV at my local CompUSA in Memphis, TN. They are closing down and everything is between 10-40% off the regular price. Rebates and other special offers don't apply though. Most of the stuff is overpriced to begin with, so mild to medium deals in the store. The only good deals were the LCD, projection and plasma TVs they have on sale. I was surprised that all 5 of Akai plasmas were still in the store when I got mine. They've sold most of the other TVs though but I was the first person to buy one of the Akai plasma. Good luck. Akai 50" plasma specifications.

I've heard bad things about Akai as a company. Can anyone confirm their quality? I can't find reviews on this model anywhere.

I've read reviews from some people buying smaller plasmas that had problems in the past year. They could not return them to Walmart or get Akai's support to fix the problems and these were on 6 month old plasmas.

Yeah, I wouldnt buy a product from a store going south unless I was darn sure the manufacturer of said product had my back.

CompUSA is reputable.....sort of. He can always drive it to another store for a return since it's such a big-ticket item. I'm just thinking he might want to see if he can get a refund on it before it goes out. I've read at least 7 reviews about Akai products having this problem and most were smaller Plasmas. It's a sign that they are putting either cheap or seconds parts in their TVs. I would only buy a plasma from a company with a proven track-record. Especially since many companys are moving away from the technology.

Anyhow, I wish you the best of luck with whatever you do and certainly hope that your TV isn't one of the problem units.
