long as ur not overclocking your FSB, just go ahead and unplug it from the board. The northbridge doesn't get that hot anyway. BTW, I have 2 Shuttle AK31 boards and ONLY the rev 3.1 board has the noisy fan. The other Rev. 2.0 board fan is fine.

Damn this is like the 20th Shuttle Chipset Fan gone bad! What's up with Shuttle chipset's fan? I can point you two a couple of other threads where people fan's gotten really noisy or died.

Simple solution just unplug it. If you're not overclocking you should be fine. The fan on the northbridge is purely cosmetic anyway. You should be fine on just the passive one underneath the fan. But what would be great though if you can remove the fan from ontop of the heatsink so it can get better airflow without the dead fan sitting on top of it.

I've been running my AK31 3.1 without a chipset fan for 2 weeks now -fine. I was about to buy a replacement but I heard its not really necessary.

U can replace it w/ a TT blue ORB or Zalman NB cooler. If u r not into O/Cing, u can unplug the fan from the mobo & leave it as it is. Passive cooling is sufficient for system running at rated speed.

Ok, I will probably remove the fan. I removed it to clean it once to see if it would help, but that did not fix the problem. I'm running 133/266 bus, so will that cause too much heat?

Also, do other KT266A motherboards have a fan on the chipset also?
