Hello all. I'm building a new computer, and right now I am in the process of receiving all the parts in the mail. Through my work (Circuit City), I got a sweet corporate discount on an ATI All-In-Wonder X1800 XL. The cost was $260 after shipping. I bought this over a 7800GT just because of the price available to me. I know that this card was only available for purchase with the discount about 1 month ago, and it was released in the summer I believe. So my question is, do I send this card back and wait for the X1900 XL or an AIW X1900XL? I don't have another graphics card that I can use in the meantime, so basically my computer would be a pile of parts until the X1900 series was released and then a few months later available with the discount..

It's really up to you. But before I elaborate, let me just say that you're a lucky son of a gun for being able to find that card at that price. I've been looking around for a good deal on one and none of them come even remotely close to that.

In the long run, I doubt that either R520 or R580 will be able to shake a stick at what's in store for us when the new generation comes out in the Spring, but that doesn't mean that they're bad by any means. R520 seems to be pretty adequate for the time being, and R580 has a great deal of longevity built into it. So much longevity, in fact, that I've seen a few people on various forums saying that the full potential of R580's additional shaders won't actually be seen this year.

If you're really that unsatisfied with your current All-in-Wonder x1800XL's gaming performance, then by all means save up for r580's AIW offering. Personally, I think that if you're satisfied with its current performance you should hold off on upgrading until you can see exactly what features the x1900 AIW will have. Maybe, just maybe, ATI will decide to get rid of the Theater 200 chip in favor of the 550. Who knows? Maybe you'd be better off waiting on upgrading your video card until it starts to get truly long in the tooth.

Hey thanks for your thought out reply.

I think I disagree with you about the R580. I don't think it will last that long if it doesn't support DirectX 10. Then it will be obsolete if you want Windows Vista.

Even Xpress200 integrated graphics are "Vista Ready", so the cards won't be obsolete and will be supported in Vista. Are Vista Graphics requirements even final yet?

You know, I completely forgot about D-X 10. Well, you did give me an idea...I'm going to work at either Best Buy or Circuit City over the summer, so I'll just stick with what I have for now and buy myself a brand-new D-X 10 compliant card for my birthday in June with an employee discount. Now that's a plan! ;)

Alright, well...R520 and R580 won't be COMPLETELY obsolete, but in terms of raw power R580 is likely to have a fairly significant edge over R520.
