Ok,

Here are my system specs:

AMD Tbird 1.2ghz 266FSB
ASUS A7M266
256 PC2100 DDR
AIW Radeon 32mb APG (orig, drv ver. 3276 - 6025 - 6032)
SB Live! Value
30gig Deskstar 75
Plextor 12x10x32x
BTC 16x/40x
Running WinXP Pro

Here is my problem:

My main problem is with Halflife (its the only game currently installed that uses OpenGL). I load it up, 1024x768, it runs for about 10 seconds then locks up (hard lock requiring restart). I have tried the drivers that come on the CD, they new 'Official' drivers from ATI, the new 'Official Beta' drivers from ati, and the 'Unofficial Beta' drivers off Rage3d. all the drivers, except the 6032s (Rage3d), crash after the 10 seconds. i can run the game in D3D with nice frames, but there are a lot of artifacts and tearing. I've tried adjusting the settings and options but i can't get Halflife stable in OpenGL or clean in D3D.

The exception is when i install the Rage3d (6032s) drivers, OpenGL runs flawlessly and super fast. On the downside those betas do not support my AIW Radeon... instead it loads the card as a 7200 series. I've tried installing the 6032s then just the Multimedia drivers from the 6025s but that doesn't work either (MMC crashes as well as Halflife).

Also is it possible to tell WinXP 'not' to install drivers automatically? like back in win98 where you could tell it to be a 'Standard VGA Adapter' and then you could install the new version?

Anyways any help would be much appreciated. i'm not the brightest computer guy here, but i can follow. If its something stupid LMK, or just a setting i haven't tried. I have Radeonator v1.41 and R3dTweak for reg editing progz. I'm dl'ing MMC 7.5 w/DVD right now so maybe that might help. anyways... all i want to be able to do is make Halflife run fast and smooth with no articfacts or tearing and be able to watch TV. Plz post your suggestions/solutions in the thread, my PM box is getting kinda full. thx in advance:)

I use the 6025 drivers and XP, I don't play HL, but I play UT with OpenGL and they work great for me. MMC 7.5 works very good with my AIW as well, but its not going to help you with this(download it anyway though!)

Here's how I install my cards in XP, and it works for me everytime.

Uninstall the card from device manager. Reboot and let XP install the native XP drivers. This will install the MS driver, and the rage theater drivers. Then I install MMC. At this point you should have a fully functioning card except OpenGL(no OpenGL support with the Native XP Radeon drivers). You need to test it at this point, run 3DMark 2001 to test DirectX. It should run fine, but a bit slow. If everything checks out, then I install Manually which ever driver I want to use. Currently 6025's, but I found the 6018's to be a great driver set as well. I just extract the driver to a location like c:\video\6025 andd then update the driver with the *.inf file and after another reboot, I update the Rage Theater drivers manually with the wdm *inf file (each ATI* entry individually under sound, video and game controllers) Now, everything should be working well.

If performance is off at this point, its likely time to prune the registry and system32 folders for strays. I would do that right after I uninstalled the card from device manager, but before I reboot.

This method has worked for me everytime with 3 different Radeon cards including 2 AIW Radeons and 2 different MB's. YMMV.

Side Note, if you do not see a WDM *.inf file in a driver set, do not install those drivers for your AIW.

I have the AIW 7500 and am using the wxp-766-04-020129x-2545e drivers. I am not sure where I got them at, but they run Quake2 and American McGee's Alice very well. (both open gl) I had downloaded the drivers from rage3d, but had problems in Quake2. I just got Alice, so I am unsure how those would have worked with them.

Good luck
