aiw 9800 pro refurb: (very) few, but still some artifacts in 3dmark03

Hey,

i just got my 3rd (THIS ONE WORKS FINALLY!!! W00t) refurb aiw 9800 pro (240 at newegg 🙂 ) and it seems to do well at defaults .... 5640 marks

with max AA and AF for opengl and d3d, and truform (not sure if that matterd...put it on app pref....whats this really do??) and got 2054 marks

it looked GREAT 'cept:

1) in the cpu test for the troll cave one RIGHT in the beggining when the chick is in the doorway theres some white speckles

2) in the pixel shader 2.0 test w/ the elephant and rhino there were (very) few white specks like in the cpu test, like at the points furthest away from the "camera" when the animals were turning a few would come up..

these things happened tho w/ my friends 9800 pro that he got (refurb also...220 at newegg) which i put in a few days ago, so this isnt phasing me too much...

should i be worried? or does this happen for all people?

athlon xp 2500+ @ 3200+ (vcore 1.725, vddr 2.7)
a7n8x deluxe
aiw 9800 pro (FINALLY!!)

thanks

With a K8V Deluxe, Athlon 64 3000+ and a refurbed PowerColor 9800 Pro at stock I didn't notice any pixelation or white spots in the tests. The card ended up having major problems though (fan would sound like a dentist drill at times and lots of artifacts in 3d games) after only 4 days. Got it RMA'd and eventually refunded. Got a OEM Sapphire on the way, so i'll let you know if that is any different. I don't remember what the original score was, it was similiar to yours though.

J~

I have a 9800pro AIW and have never had any problems with it. Mine is not a refurb. You shouldn't be having any issues like that.

the elephant / rhino test will show some small white speckles, its just normal. their is a thread somewhere on beyond3d I will try to locate

With my 9700pro I saw the occasional white speckle on elephant Rhino test at stock. When I improved the air flow in my case they went away. So just wondering if they are heat related?

Yes, it's a heat issue, or your card is clocked too high.

My 9800Pro does NOT speckle at stock, nor when even moderately overclocked, no matter what I run. Pushing the core frequency a little higher gives speckling during graphically intense scenes (3DMark01 Nature, 3DMark03 Mother Nature, 3DMark03 Pixel Shader 2.0), and pushing it much past that gives speckling all the time in any 3D app. Overclocking the memory too much gives nasty artifacts everywhere.

Try *under*clocking your card (down to like 300/300) and see if the problem disappears. If so, either your case airflow is inadequate (these cards run *hot*), your heatsink isn't mounted well (often a problem with refurbs), or the card is FUBAR.

This is normal, it happens on both my geforce FX5600s as well.

Running the game Combat Flight Simulator 3 with 4x Anti-Aliasing enable results in texture corruption being displayed. This issue occurs under Windows XP with the RADEON? 8500. The current workaround is not to use Anti-Aliasing
Enabling extended desktop mode and setting the display resolution to 1024x768 32bpp results in the game Aquanox and Star Trek Armada 2 failing to respond. This issue occurs under Windows XP with the RADEON? 9000 installed. The current workaround is to either disable extended desktop mode, or trying a different resolution
3Dmark2003 GT4 runs a little slower than expected on certain chipsets where AGP writes are disabled. A future CATALYST? will resolve this and provide a higher benchmark score
3DMark2003 has some minor corruption on the RADEON? 9500 and RADEON? 9700 series cards when running in Anti-Aliasing modes. This however does not impact scores Star Wars Jedi Knight 2 may hang when using High Quality setting in the video quality selector. This is a known issue for the RADEON? 7500. Try lowering your video quality slider
Myth III may crash when enabling TRUFORM for the RADEON? 9500 and RADEON? 9700 series cards. The current workaround is to not use TRUFORM at the current time

From this thread, try running without AA and see if they go.
