Airports + banning liquids

So when they scan your bags, they can see liquids? I mean I guess they can see shapes of bottles and stuff and nab you for that, but what if you carried it on your body? What the hell is the point of the whole banning liquids thing? I find it pointless.

I flew from Seoul => Taipei => SFO just now and so I transferred @ Taipei. As I went to the transfer hallway, I had to be re-scanned with a metal detector and x-ray machine. Okay. I'm now in the gates area and I find out that they seal off the last 3 gates because there are 3 flights bound for the US there (SFO, LAX and SEA) and that there will be an additional security scan there. If you're entering the airport from Taipei (non transfer), you already have to go through security + immigration to get into the international area obviously. As a transfer, I had to get scanned to get in, so they want an ADDITIONAL scanning to flights bound to the US.

And guess what they do at the additional security checkpoint? They check your passport and your ticket. Okay, didn't immigration and security do that to begin with? And then what? They scan your bags. No metal detector. What's worse is there's this lady asking "Do you have a lighter? Alcohol?" repeating in English and Chinese. Some people who don't speak either language didn't understand. This kid in front of me pulled out cigarettes and a lighter.

What bothers me is you have to get scanned once already, so this means he brought a lighter through already? What's worse is this is an HONOR SYSTEM? So if he didn't answer truthfully he could've kept walking with his lighter? What's the point of only doing an x-ray scan when you can just stuff everything into your pockets?

I actually carried liquids through. I had a contact lens case with lens solution inside the case because I forgot to empty it out this morning as I put on my contacts. That's what.. 5 - 6 drops of solution? It was in my pocket. I didn't know it was filled until I pulled them out just now to take off my contacts.

I find this whole liquids thing to be a joke, and I don't see how security can deal with it effectively other than to make sure you don't have jack in your backpack.

I was just annoyed because they had 1 x-ray machine and 2 peopel checking passports for 3 US flights scheduled to leave sometime in the same 30 minute period. While I was in line they started hurrying the Seattle passengers to the front. By the time it was my turn they started hurrying the San Francisco passengers, to the front. How ridiculous. And to speed it up they took the lady who was asking for lighters out of the process, meaning you could carry anything in your pockets (I went in and out of the area twice).

According to the TSA, if you have bathroom liquids (less than 3oz each (container size) and in a clear plastic bag), you remove the plastic bag from your carry on so it can be scanned separately. Medical items, such as formula and eye drops can be brought on in unlimited amounts.

It's a pretty stupid rule. What they need to do is invest money into highering competent screeners and actually putting real security in place instead of instilling this false sense of security.

Not to mention that you have to take off your shoes because what, one person had some sort of shoe bomb? Granted, it's not the worse thing they could have you do, but oy...

It sounds like they were not screening properly. The U.S. standards imposed on Foreign Carriers to the U.S. are the exact same as they impose on domestic airlines here. Their equipment most certainly can determine if there are liquids in a bag, but they do NOT catch everything.

That being said, it is an incredibly stupid piece of policy. However, it can and will be enforced. I've watched dozens of travelers have to scurry to the closest place that is open to buy a quart-sized bag. They won't catch everyone, but I'd say they catch over 75% that has more than one or two items.

It really isn't that much of a problem. I was able to fit everything I needed in a quart-sized bag, and that included my own travel size TP and a set of babywipes, contact solution, fold-up toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, contact case, lotion, and flosser.

Even thought I really hate it, I haven't had a hard time complying. That does not, however MEAN that it is ok. It is stupid. Period.

In Bogota they have Colombian Police and Military lined up after you exit Customs/Immigration. They will randomly search about every third person. Then, while in line to board, you have to go through another metal detector, have your bags screened a SECOND time, and then they end up hand searching about half of all carry-ons. This is not their overall policy. Just for flights to the U.S. or other European countries that have enacted the liquid ban.

It's not just liquids, it's any kind of food as well. On flights over 4 hours I used to bring a sandwich, hard boiled eggs, etc. You CAN however, once passed the security gate purchase one of their 'bomb free' sandwichs for 8 or 10 dollars, chips are extra.

I took two small bottles of Purell through security - forgot to take them out of the bottom of my bag and put them in with the other liquids I was showing them.

Not once, but twice.

I was just discussing this with someone and the point i made was: You're allowed to bring 3 oz on, what's stopping from 10 different people bringing 3 oz of the same thing in different bottles (hell, even the same bottles, and people wouldn't realize as long as they're scattered) and then getting together to put something together?

They won't find them with the regular detectors, but if for some reason you get frisked, I'd assume that you will get the 3rd degree.
