Airport Express + extreme question

I just ordered an airport extreme because I've been tired of terrible wifi issues (partially because so many of my neighbors have wifi - 12+ access points show up) and wonder if also getting an airport express to work in tandem with the extreme would help. What I want to know is if the extreme + express combo is just using the express as a wifi repeater (similar to just using my extra dd-wrt flashed router as a repeater) or is there some proprietary/powerline magic going on. Is there any advantage to an express + extreme over using an extreme with an off brand router in repeater/bridge mode.

Easier to set up the Express probably, and the Express supports AirPlay (I think) so you can stream music and what not from your computer to your TV/Stereo.
