Airport Express (2012) or Airport Extreme (2009)?

Which would you prefer as your only access point in a small townhouse? I currently have a 2nd Gen Airport Express (2012), and my friend is offering a straight trade for his 4th Gen Airport Extreme (2009). Neither has ever had a single issue. He doesn't use it anymore because he likes the functionality he gets from a DD-WRT router, but he wants an Express to use as a repeater.

I do not use the AirPlay port on the Express, and I do not have a need for the addition Ethernet ports nor USB on the Extreme. This will be used strictly as an access point since my U-Verse Residential Gateway handles my DHCP and routing.

I am borrowing the Extreme for the weekend to evaluate it myself. I seem to be getting almost the same signal, but I have noticed that I have gotten to 300 Mbps on occasion. I never saw more than 216 Mbps with my Express.

Thanks for your advice in advance!

Get a cheap WNR2000v2 from Newegg for $20 on sale, and flash DD-WRT on it.

The Express I already own, and the question is whether I should trade it (with no exchange of money) for an Extreme. I am not looking to purchase a new router.

The WNR2000v2 is only a 2.4 Ghz router, and, in my opinion, not comparable to these simultaneous dual-band models.

Hmm.. Why would you? What are you envisioned?

If you just want to do him a favor, test it in doing real Large file transfer. The static number that shown in the Wireless configuration is not accurate.

Well, I was hoping for a win/win trade. He gets his repeater, I get an optimized base station. The Extreme has 3 antennae so it is capable of 450 Mbps whereas the Express is only capable of 300 Mbps. They are both simultaneously dual-band capable now so that is out of contention.
