For the last few years I have been hearing worries that cyber terrorists will hack into the power grid to cause problems. Specifically, at airports.

In March at Dulles Airport there was an outage in the main terminal, ticketing, and also concourses A, B, C, and D.

At Reagan National the other day, an airport-wide power outage. Officials said it should not have happened as Reagan gets their power from two separate sources.

I guess I would want to know why the backup generators didn’t go on? In todays critical electrical needs world, who doesn’t have a backup power supply? Heck, in my house right now I have probably no less than 5 UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supplies) along with a backup generator. In a worse case scenario, I don’t think I would be down for more than a few minutes, if at all.

Officials are saying about the airport power outages is that they are looking into it. My feeling is that if there was a lightning strike or some other problem, they would say what caused it and the solution they put in place. On the other hand, if it was a terrorist act, they would just say “they are looking into it” and try and let it fade away. Taking power away from an airport is just a step away from taking it away from a hospital, old age home, mass transit, or other critical electrical use need. Sort of reminds me of the movie Live Free or Die Hard (Die Hard 4).

I wonder what airport or hospital will be next?
