AirPlay Receiver worth the $$$?

I'm looking to upgrade my receiver from a very aged (20+ years) HK to something a little newer. I would love the ability to stream music from my computer/iPhone, and am loosely looking at a low end AirPlay equipped reciever (Pioneer/Denon both make one in the $500) range. However, I'm wondering if it is worth the cash to go to an AirPlay equipped receiver or if I'm better off just getting a newer non-AirPlay receiver and getting an AppleTV or something to go with it. Are there any benefits either way that immediately come to mind?

Just get an Airport Express or AppleTV.

The only advantage with getting a receiver with built in AirPlay would be that you don't have to change the input to the AppleTV or Airport Express.

Also note that if you are planning on using a receiver for multiple zones, many cannot do zone2 through a digital source so you would need a SPDIF to analog converter for an AppleTV to run Zone2.

Excellent point. That one caught me off guard too. Optical out on my Sonos wasn't working through Zone 2. Had to move to old school RCA.

Thats pretty crappy, I would think it would be easier to distribute audio digitally within the amp and then convert it and amplify it out the door. I guess the older analog components are cheaper...

I got one because I wanted Airplay. I haven't hooked it up yet, but I"m excited. It'll turn itself on when you select Airplay from the iOS device so I can not have to have the TV on or anything or be in the same room to get music going on it. I know, lazy, but the geek in my is excited.
