crosswind landing. Put the nose into the wind. If you don't do this you will actually end up next to the runway

The first time I experienced it was at Hong Kong's old Kai Tak. I was young and it seemed like a lot of fun to me. Not so much for the people around me.

I had a few flights like that into Cleveland, OH of all places. On one, I swear we were almost perpendicular to the runway. He hovered above the runway for at least 10 seconds or more before missing the landing and trying again.

I actually go to the point where I liked them, because people would always start freaking out. It's sad, but that's the little enjoyment you sometimes get when you fly too much.

I fly into Cleveland all the time and that's never happened to me. The only time I've experienced a landing like that was flying into Salt Lake City. It was with a high school trip and a lot of the kids on the plane had never flown before. Everyone thought we were going to die. I thought it was kind of fun.

Yeah I thought shiet was ganna hit the fan there.

That was the first boeing 777 doing flight tests. There is a specification " maximum crosswind component" for landings and another for takeoffs.
They were discovering what that number really is:D
The F-18 landing right after that was very impressive. Watch the flight controls as the pilot keeps that 'narrow gear short wheelbase' beast upright and on track. He was moving the stick and rudders with full deflections.

The Beech 1900 after that was a classic steady-state wind crosswind landing. That was textbook.

I still remember folks drying their clothes in the sun as we sped past their roof's approaching the landing area at Kai Tak. Anyways, I had a great time in HK last week...

You are wrong. They were not drying their clothes in the sun. They were using the jet blast ;)

The checkerboard was the scariest landing I have been on that was normal. Even spooked the Evergreen captain next to us. He had never been a passenger, always in control.

This sentence fails.

It's called a touch-n-go. They do it when redoing the landing is safer than the current landing arrangement.

Never been in an aborted landing, but i HAVE been in an aborted takeoff. We were almost at full speed with the nose just ready to come off the tarmac when the pilot hit the brakes HARD. Everyone pretty much hit the seat in front of them, and one of the food carts which wasnt properly secured bounced out of its place in the galley and made a hell of a racket back there. Thankfully it didnt come careening down the aisle.

Needless to say, when people opened the overhead compartments, shit was everywhere.

Even scarier, four hours later we took off successfully on the same plane.. Obviously we all made it :)

Wellington airport is an abomination. They should level it and start again, I've been in a few planes that have landed there and no landings have been smooth.

Ah, crosswinds! I love 'em. I've been in my fair share of them, having flown cargo all over Alaska in a B727 into and out of short-ass runways, some of which were gravel. Between chronic wind shear, severe gusts, and caribou wandering onto the runway just as you touch down on the opposite end, it's always an adventure...

But nothing I've experienced compares to the videos from Kai Tak. Our current D.O. flew for Evergreen as a 747 captain and has landed at Kai Tak probably hundreds of times before they shut it down, and he ALWAYS has fun stories to tell. He never scraped an engine on that runway, unlike many other pilots.

There isn't anything to worry about though; unless you're talking about a hurricane, you and the plane will be just fine. Those planes are so massive that you require significant torque to actually have problems. Light winds might create a wobble, heavy winds might shake the plane a bit, but ultimately you're safe.

no, that's when you are practicing landings.
The term is go around, or rejected landing, or !@#!$^^^&$!$111!
