Airlines to allow cell phone use on flights

Pretty smart way to do it, if I understand current cellular technology correctly the phones should be putting out an incredibly low powered signal (since the "tower" will be at most a hundred feet away).
I really can't see them doing it without trying to profit from it, I wonder how they will pull that off.
What we really need though is cheap in flight broadband.
I don't like being disconnected for my drive home from work, flights are horrendous.

When I fly I wear earplugs. They come in handy when there is an enfant on the flight and they lower the ambient noise level which makes for a more relaxing trip.

I like that idea, but can you actually get a signal at 10,000 feet.

As long as people exhibit good cell phone etiquette, I don't have a problem with it. Cell phone etiquette is a problem that goes beyond in-flight calls. Hopefully the airlines will enforce some courtesy rules surrounding calls:
1. Turn off obnoxiously loud ringers. Keep ringer volume low or set it on vibrate.
2. Speak at the same volume level as you would with a fellow passenger.

IIRC, the big problem is that handoffs between cells put strain on the cell phone network not getting a signal. Usually, when you're on the ground driving around it takes a while to go completely across a cell and on to the next one but when you're zooming along in a plane you go in and out of cells like its nobody's business so the network is constantly handing off your call between cells. Also, I'd be very surprised if you could get consistent service midflight, I'm pretty sure cell tower antennas are not omnidirectional and have very little power being emitted upwards.
Basically this will be a pain in the ass for the mobile phone companies, not the airlines.

i commute from nj to ny everyday on a transit bus and no one ever speaks at a normal volume. people feel the need to yell into their phone on my commute.
bonus obnoxious points to the nextel users who use their walkie-talkie feature with the speaker. (do they know they can use walkie-talkie without the speaker?)
