Airlines flying lower now?

I just noticed this last night, Commercial Airlines are flying alot closer to the ground then before. This is in NYC. Anyone else besides me notice this?

It seems like that to me also (Detroit area), we are not so near the airport where you would normally see them as low as I've witnessed lately.

I noticed that also. I din't remember being able to see so much detail on them as they fly over.

Same here... My heart skipped a beat the first time I saw a 767 fly over my home a few weeks ago, normally they are up around 2,000 feet or so, this one was about 700 or 800 feet, low enough that I could hear each engine which I normally cannot hear...

I live right next to DFW airport...

My thinking is that they don't want the planes up high near an airport, why I don't know...

Another "yes" vote for here in Austin. Noticed that the other evening. The approach for ABIA is about 1/2 mile from our house. Now one can easily see the windows on the aircraft.

Perhaps they are concerned that Bin Laden smuggled in some of his Stingers and might get near an airport and shoot down an airliner? Perhaps the Stinger cannot lock on below 1,000 feet?

Just a crazy idea...

yeah... new jersey... we've noticed them flying very low since a few days after the 11th... i don't know about the 700 feet that someone else mentioned earlier in this thread... they're not that low, but much lower than they usually fly. and they usually fly higher than 2000 feet, maybe you meant 20,000 feet...

I did say it was a crazy idea...

A MUCH easier way to bring down airplanes... Mail a bomb with an altitude detonator switch, set it to go off at 20,000 feet, mail it from the East Coast to the West coast, it will go on an airliner and blow it up high enough to destroy the plane...

Mail out 20 of them to 20 different cities, they may catch a few, but they won't get them all...

Ill be the first to say no, just got back from a trip.

4 US AIR airplanes. Kansas City, Charlot, and Sarasota airports. All had a cruising altitude of 35,000 feet.

Yea, I live just off the highway that runs through the airport, they fly right over my home when they land... They take off in another direction... It used to be that they were just small specs in the sky, now they are low enough that I can read the tail numbers... (and that is low my friends...)

No, we're talking about how low they fly when they take off and land...

They have to fly that high to get good fuel econemy...

Interesting fact... The 747-400 gets 750 feet to the gallon... Now work that out in miles per gallon per passanger if there are 450 people on board...

ah, ok.. thought you were refering to normal flight and not takeoff/landing.. however, i'll repeat, in new jersey we have noticed most, if not all, airliners have been flying much lower than normal. it isn't because we're paying more attention to it. they are just much lower up there than they used to be.
