I was visiting another forum called flytalk.com. I fly with United Airlines and wanted to figure out some good ways to earn some extra miles so I can earn elite status to get all the little perks in traveling. So after visiting this website if figured out there are lots of insane people that travel for absolutely no reason. Apparently people are so wrapped up on these mileage programs that they suggest doing Mileage Runs. Which means to find the cheapest ticket with the most traveled miles and spend a weekend day flying around the US just to rack up miles and gain elite status. (sounds kinda like a fetish). Does anyone do this here or is this like a hobby for people? Thoughts.

I don't get the point.. wouldn't it be cheaper to buy the perks of elite status rather than buy mileage?

I wouldn't mind doing that because I enjoy flying. I find it more acceptable to do this rather than upgrade a video card or processor every 2 months.

I can understand it if you are a few hundred miles short, on United for example there is a huge difference between being a Premier and a Premier Executive, for one if you are a Premier Executive you can use the Red Carpet Club lounges (private lounges) when you fly internationally. I used to fly to and from Salt Lake to the East coast and would frequently fly out to San Fransisco to catch the red-eye flight, it beat wasting a day just flying and it gave me a few extra hundred miles.

I pay for travel and try to fly a lot when the tickets are cheap and keep my miles to use when it is expensive, a late Aug roundtrip to Japan for instance would cost about $1300 while in Mar I could fly for about $600-700 for example, or when I have an emergency.

I know my mom is talking about visiting me in May because she can get a cheap ticket, she has been a 1K Premier member on United for a number years and just got Million Mile status. If it was more expensive she wouldn't have but since it is pretty cheap, why not?

you enjoy being treated like cattle by the airlines, squeezed into ever shrinking seats, with non-existant knee room. Or is it the chance that you will be next to the window with a 400 sweaty and not too clean fat person in the middle seat who's rolls of fat roll over onto you?

Or is it the excitement that you might be selected to be patted down by a TSA agent in public view of all the other passangers, or the thought of some TSA agent checking out you underwear during a luggage inspection?

Never had a problem with, but I am based out of DTW.

I'm not very tall and have never though the seats were uncomfortable

I always travel with my fiancee, so this has never happened to me. I always get window :p

Doesn't really bother me. I know why it is being done and I accept that.

I've done it, but not for mileage, but because I LOVE to fly. I've seen people bounce ten cities in a day for fun.
