Airforce or Navy?

I am thinking about enlisting. I have talked to both Navy and Airforce and as of right now I am leaning towards the Airforce just because their life is closest to civilian life comparing to other forces. However I like navy because it seems like they will be visiting other parts of the world more than the Airforce. Only thing that is kind of a turn off for me is that after 6 years of service and if I decide to stay then I can't imagine myself going on their deployments up to 6 months for a deployment while having a family. I would miss out so much stuff from deployments.

what are you guy's thoughts?

I have created a Poll but I really love if you guys share your thoughts with me.

My ex-wife's father served on the USS Manchester during the Korean War. Her brother was on the USS Eisenhower in the early 80s. They both enjoyed their time, have great stories to tell, and recommend the Navy over any other branch.

But...that's just them. ;)

Never been in military but from talking to some friends it all depends on a person. What is your reason for joining? You want to have experience of military or u want to make your carrier? Also chances are u will miss allot of what happens with your family in either branch of service as u never know what can happen in the world ex Iraq. I would vote navy as it seems they travel more and that what I would like more.

Air Force will give you the best quality of life IMO. I was in for 4 years, 1987-1991 (yes, during the "original" Gulf War) and I had nothing but good experiences. I never went overseas but that was mainly because I did not want to - if I would have had the desire it would have been possible. I can't even begin to imagine how sh!tty it would be to be stuck on a ship for months at a time....

The Air Force gave me first college degree, paid for the second one, and a VA loan made it possible for me to buy my first house. I also got to see and do some fantastic things, stuff I will remember forever. Also got to meet people from all over the place, some of whom are still my friends today.

The Navy's OK but why settle for second-best? If you have any questions feel free to PM me.

K.. I want to join the military so I can gain experience in both career and life experience. I know that by join navy I would gain life experiences because they will visit more parts of the world then Airforce and by joining Airforce I know I have better chance getting experience for my career. I like to go for computer related field or Information Technology field and it seems that Airforce have more of options in that field.

What is on my mind right now is what if I join the Navy and like it and would like to stay in the Navy that means I might miss some importants of my family. I mean I don't mind traveling for 6 years because right now I have nothing attached... but if I got married and have kids then I don't want to miss my kids growing up because I am out on deployments.

someone will correct if I am wrong on this but when u are joining either service u only sign contract with them for first 2 years after that u can sign a new one for 4 years I think or leave the service. Btw also someone correct me I am wrong but if u go with navy u will not need to redo boot camp if u switch directly from to navy to air force that is not true the other way.

be a loadmaster in the Air Force, you'll see everything and I hear the deployments aren't that bad!

And what are those flying contraptions on the decks of all of those aircraft carriers? :)

For your interests, Airforce.

Navy is a lifestyle change - at least if you're in the deploying fleet.

I'd join Navy myself, but then - I like the lifestyle, being at sea, different countries...

I think they are using Pilots & Navigators for those. Better be able to pass a flight physical!

okay.. don't quote me on it.. because I just hear them from the recruiter and we all know how realiable they are ;)

Airforce's boot camp 6 & 1/2 weeks the shortest in the military. requires 2 miles in 18 minutes and some other stuff. mostly from what I have heard is they will focus on the mental toughness.

Nave's boot camp is around 8 weeks. I don't know their requirements but the recruiter told me that they are now require to have at least 8 hours of sleep and that they are building insides tracks so that you don't run or march outside now.

LASIK Surgery is not waiverable I don't think. For Air Force Pilots anyways. I heard they had some problems with high alt+high G's in test flights causing the pilots eyes to explode :( . this was just what I heard, so take it with a grain of salt. in any case, PRK is allowed and waiverable, and the Air Force will even pay for it once you're in. (I guess you'd have to apply to a non rated position and get accepted, then get the surgery, then pass your flight physical, then get accepted to the pilot training. Not sure how that works.) I should find out tomorrow if I was selected for the Air Force Officer Training School....should be fun!

If you go into the Air Force as an officer, you do not have to do basic training. Other than that, I think that basic is about the same across all the branches with the exception of the Marine Corps which is more demanding.
