Just curious, is there anything protecting a sailor from falling off? Let's say an extreme gust of wind or something of that sort?

Watched the CNN special on carriers, thought it was pretty interesting how everything works

They usually have magnetic shoes they wear which keeps them fastened to the deck.

I think the part about mag shoes isnt true. Some parts of the ship does not reallt have a railing. Sailors are not expected to go near the edge on some ends of the ship.

theres a net. if a plane misses the landing area a lot of the deck crew will jump into the net and hope a large aircraft part doesn't hit them.

Actually, there nets (made out of steel cable) for some of the areas, but not all. You are pretty much expected to use a little (cough-cough) common sense. Besides, you just don`t jump up on the flight deck, you have to go through safety training first.

Want some digital pics? PM me and I`ll see what I can do. Carrier is about 4 blocks from where I work.

I read that if the line snaps it could decapitate a person on the deck and that they might not notice he is gone untill the next day, how could that be if there are nets everywhere?

actually your wrong...any "open" area has the nets, and completely surrounding the flight deck are either nets or 3 rung steel ropes to keep you from falling overboard.I was stationed aboard the USS Coral Sea CV-43 and worked in the combat information center, right below the flight deck

Well, I could be wrong but I don`t remember seeing the nets all the way around. I`ll just go take a Mk1 Mod 0 eyeball observation in about an hour and get back to you on that, shipmate. :)

They don't have steel nets. They are meant for jets to take off of. Not for dumb tourists to stand on the edge and watch the water go by.

The safety nets are hung below the flight deck level.

Check the picture of the bow of the Kittyhawk. You can see where the nets are.

Hammer, the front of the turbine is the area to avoid. The rear will get you a quick sun tan:p

You may also wish to include a link to the video that I suspect you may be refering to.

EagleKeeper: I was referring to the front. I don't have the link anymore. I'm sure that doesn't happen in the AF, does it? ;)

Heck no. Our crew chiefs and support are smarter than that:p

Far enough so you can not get past them accidently.

I don't know about now but when I was onboard the USS Independence there was nothing between you and the water but a 4 foot wide catwalk that ran along the sides of the flight deck. On the stern portion of the flight deck there was a rounded transition from the horizontal flight deck to the vertical stern called the round down. The bow of the flight deck had nothing but perhaps a net out of view below (I never noticed one there but cannot say for sure). You were basically supposed to be very aware of your surroundings and actions while out on the flight deck, especially during flight ops. There was a guy up in the island called the Air Boss that would yell nasty things at you over the PA if he observed some particularly stupid action on your part.
