Aircards - what bitrates are we talking about

i have a problem at work. If I want to bring my laptop, I am going to need to get an aircard for internet access. The office network goes through the hospital and we are forbidden from connecting. (believe it or not the whole hospital has only 1.5Mb/s) So I was thinking of getting an aircard, problem is were on the Edge of the AT&T network, and even my Iphone has trouble with internet access. Even verizon is Edge.
So if they ever get the area serviced, what kind of bitrates can you expect from these aircards.
Also apreciate it if anyone has any other ideas.
Thanks

It varies extensively with the signal strength, tower loading, tower bandwidth. My sprint card on "3G" mode seems to vary from 15-90k / second with a pretty horrid upload. In "4G" mode I see 3Mb down 768Kb or so up.

Why are you bringing a personal computer to work?

With some downtime, I was playing games mostly MMO's, hanging on facebook, and listening to music. None of which can be done on the work pc's. I was also studying for board exams, or using my rosetta stone to try and learn japanese.
Not to mention that 90% of the links that I see on here, esp ATOT, were blocked.
