TOULOUSE, France (Reuters) - Airbus agreed with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Sunday to study the possibility of setting up an assembly line in China -- a move that could see its jets being built outside Europe for the first time.

I know it isn't unusual to farm our some assemblies to the client nation, but the entire plane?

McDonnell Douglas did this with some MD-90 frames.

The stupidity of the French never ceases to amaze me. Those socialists are simply handing their country away as it is already. Oh well, Airbus sucks anyway and I don't want to be on one now so if China builds them that will really seal the deal for me.

More disturbing, to me anyways, is the transfer of technology in building large modern planes. This would undoubtedly be used by the Chinese in the military program for bomber construction.

But not necessarily the exact same quality control.

Wait a sec. If your mb is built in China- are you going to stop using it?

Wasn't the Challenger Space Shuttle built by some of the brightest minds our best colleges graduated? China has some quality control problems but so does America. Remember the Ford Pinto and Chevy Vega?

Exactly. I've worked directly with Chinese components. The quality just isnt the same. Sure, you get one hell of a scorching deal but when your standing on the ground making something and it breaks you can just pitch it in the trash.
Blasting through the air at 400 miles an hour 30,000 feet off the ground in a pressurized metal cylinder is not the time I want to find out the structural integrity of the plane I'm in didnt fully meet QC and starts shedding parts.

The MD-80 wasnt necesarily all that well recieved. I was never thrilled about stepping on that plane either. Gimme the Boeing 700 series and I'll sip my rum and coke and read my magazine in peace.

That is not anything anyone can control anyway. The Chinese have displayed quite blatantly that if they cannot acquire technology legitimately they will simply steal it. They have been doing it for decades. How do you think they have grown so fast. If they want the technology to build big aircraft they are going to get it.....and then build substandard planes anyway so don't worry. China and quality are not something you usually see in the same sentence.

I don't think a whole lot of people really care about the aircraft when booking a flight.
It'll probably take something like an unfortunate disaster to change minds.

Proof that strategic considerations have gone 100% out the window in favor of economic considerations for the shareholders/rich.

I hope you all are brushing up on your Chinese in preparation of greeting our new OverLords.
