PARIS/LONDON (Reuters) - Airbus parent EADS (EAD.PA: Quote, Profile, Research) pushed back its troubled A380 superjumbo by another year and issued a new profit warning on Tuesday, infuriating airlines like top buyer Emirates which put its purchases under review.

I wonder when all the people that have preorders on the A380 are going to give up on the vaporware of aircraft and buy the new version of the 747 instead?

Emirates also orderd 10 Boeing 747-8s in addition to their 40 some A380s.

You can bet that the airline is (rather effectively) scaring the crap out of Airbus to get price reductions or lose 1/3 of the total A380 orders to Boeing.

A year in aircraft delay schedule isn't like 7 'dog-years'. Sometimes it takes time to modify critical components when the lead time on parts is 18 or more months.

My guess is they didn't order the 747-400 b/c they didn't want the 747-400.

Boeing stock seems to be showing some effects. Text

My guess is that after a thorough evaluation of capabilities, cost of ownership and expected availability, 'they' chose the A380, but that when conditions change, decisions will change as well for some customers.

Damn, looks like they took the wingtips off the new bird. I really think the 747-400 and the 737-800 with the wingtips look slick.

Although I think the 800's wingtips may be an after market modification as I see a lot of them without it.

This is now a 2 year delay, they already had one year delay.

I don't think that many of the airlines that preordered are going to jump ship, but the delays still have a major impact on Airbus. First it pushes its revenue streams back by two years, since you don't get paid until you deliever. Second, it is forcing them to keep more engineers on the A380, instead of shifting them over to the A350, which will delay that plane Link. Finally it severally hurts their credibility with airlines. So now if an airline needs 10 jumbo jets between 2011-2014 which company are they going to trust to actually make the delievers on time?

I agree that it won't be the end of Airbus, but it will definitally hurt them in the short term.

Winglets are an option on the 737s, 747-400 and I am guessing the 747-8. Some winglets like the ones being installed on 757s are after market. Southwest is also modifing many of its older 737 with winglets. The main reason for winglets if for fuel economy adding about 2-5%. They also reduce takeoff noise and distance.

I stand corrected. :) My guess is they didn't order the 747-8 b/c they wanted the A380. And if missteps at Airbus means buyers can get what they wanted (A380) at a substantial discount, then I imagine most will stick with their original choice. Except to the extent that delayed delivery makes the situation untenable.

If you look at the wings of the 747-8 and the 787 carefully you will see that they have a boomerang shape to them. Add to that the serrated edge of the engine exhaust nozzle and they have a unique look.

Well, looks like fedex has given up on the A380 and bought 777 instead.

I predict more to follow and that boeing will be eating french toast for sometime.
