I am not sue if I should post this in official war post or not

If a conventional missile would have been lunched at us, do we have the raid siren that Iraq has to warn the citizens or would government be relying on technology to intercept it and radio and TV to tell people to take cover?? Just wondering

Hmm interesting never seen them in Los Angels other then near nuclear stations to warn residence to take cover as their have been accident at the nuclear facility

Most US cities do not have civil defense systems.

There are clear reasons for this.

Back in the late 50s and early 60s the US and the USSR both had highly agressive civil defense programs designed to defend agaisnt nuclear attack. However, both nations realized that civil defense programs gave both leaders and the public a false sense of security--for example, what good would it do to save 100 million city dwellers if 99% of the farm land was a radioactive wasteland.

For this reason, the US and the USSR entered into a sort of gentlemans agreement to reduce or at least halt the development of civil defense systems, thus assuring MAD.

I think they'd just use the media, etc., since most people wou;dn't know the difference between an air raid and weather siren, if there even is one.

They must not have tornadoes or floods where you're from. Civil defense sirens are pretty common across the entire nation.

I may not know the difference but I would for sure to turn on TV or radio to find out what is going on

Well I guess that makes sense.

This doesn't make sense. Air sirens stop radioactive waste?

And what good would it do to save 100 million city dwellers? It'll save 100 million city dwellers!

I don't buy that. They knew 'duck and tuck' from a nuclear attack was useless... but they still taught it to all the children and had all those instructional videos. It was to give a false sense control and thus security. Why would you purposely want to make the population feel less secure?

I used to live in a small town in southeast ohio... I know we had them there.

Also, I was in a suburb of Chicago this summer for a few weeks... and I know that I saw several of them there. I believe that their main use is for tornadoes, but they would also be used because of a nuclear emergency, I believe... there are many reactors around there.
