Air purifier suggestions?

I live in an apartment in Manhattan and, after doing some spring cleaning today, I noticed that the amount of dust in my room is obscene. I did some reading and it seems a s if a HEPA system is the way to go. But beyond that I can't find much guidance. As quietness seems to be something to look out for, I was thinking of this one:

Kenmore 295 CADR True HEPA Air Cleaner

What do you all think? Do any of you have one?

Do you have central AC? Don't forget to change the filter there. As for an air cleaner, I'm sure any one with a real filter (i.e. not that Sharper Image crap) would be fine. We use two IQAir units at home, but that's only because of severe allergies.

One small comment.

An air purifier is only good if you have filters. Going for a Sears model is not bad because you know where to get filters.

Several years ago, I had a Norelco model filter. Worked great, and I loved it. The only problem was that I had to mail-order the filters because I could not afford them locally.

Also, a little ionization is not a bad thing, but the Sharper Image models are so powerful that they tend to produce ozone (very bad), and because there is no disposable filter, they are a mess to clean.

That model does a good job but sucks up a lot of energy. According to consumer reports anyway. Of course, they also claim the filter is $220 whereas it is actually $100. So grain of salt and what not.

I wouldn't get an ionizing one. Their only benefit is possibly being quiet. Weigh that against potential environmental issues and the fact that they are just plain ineffective for the price (for the same price you can probably get a friedrich).

I have the same one and it does a pretty good job. On the highest setting it can move huge amounts of air and still be relatively quiet compared to the canister shaped ones made by Honeywell.
