air intake sucking in hot air

Possibly, since hot air will be less dense. Cold Air Intakes are supposed to increase performance, dunno about gas mileage.

compared to if it is sucking in cooler, more dense air... theoretically, yes, you would get worse gas mileage.

becuase with cooler air, you get more bang for the buck with each little spark in the engine, more power on the same amount of fuel.

Probably.

Unfortunately, except in very rare instances, your intake will be sucking in ambient temperature air.

I believe you mean above ambient temp air. Most suck from near the headers ( my Jimmy actually had a shroud around the driverside exaust manifold that air was pulled though. That was removed by me quickly :)

Most stock cars will pull from either the engine compartment ( 10-50 deg above ambient ) from the fender well, or to either side of the radiator. My '99 ram originaly sucked air through a half dollar sized hole to the drivers side of the radiator.
