air freshener?

my poor car is losing its new car smell now. anyone have a suggestion for a GOOD air freshener? i heard none of the "new car smell" ones actually smell like a new car.

Yankee Candle makes some that are decent enough. Little pricey but they seem to last awhile.

There are some bags that go under seats. Really subtle. I found some that are made locally and not in China. They last for about 2 months. It kind of looks like a burlap type of material. They are kind of hard to find. Most are mass marketed crap that cologne bomb your car and last 3 days.

Those Christmas tree air fresheners remind me of being in high school and trying to cover up the smell of spilled coffee, beer puke and dirty panties. Memorable, but not the scent I want driving around all the time.

Surprisingly, they're the most effective I've used even if they do just mask odours. They just don't last very long. Then again I was dealing with heavy duty stink when I was cleaning rentals. Worst was when some catering company left a plate of roasted garlic in a panel van out in the hot sun over a long weekend. We never did get the smell out of it.

Go get your car detailed. All the plasticizers a detailer uses (i.e. armorall) give off VOCs, the same thing that gives a new car the "new car smell". Or just go armorall everything yourself!

Get the same type one would use in your house.

Most are such so they can sit on a table; stick in in a cup holder in the vehicle.

They last longer than the tree types and you have a larger variety to choose from.

You might look into an ozone generator. I have one that I use for everything from around the house to the cars and it works really well.

Past that, I actually like the shoe deodorizer balls. They're adjustable, so I generally just leave them closed and they last at least a year. It's a very 'light' non chemical smell, and I like that it's a generic thing. IE not 'pine trees' or 'new car'... just smells like clean sheets or something. If I pick up pizza or something like that I open them for a day or so and the smell is gone.

Ozone is terrific for cars that are smoked in etc. I think it's known to make some people nauseous though.

It does, if you leave it running in a house or whatever. For a car you should close up all the windows, set a/c to recirc then turn off car (basically closing in the cabin). Shut the ozone machine inside on high for 8 hours or so, then open the windows and let it air out.
