Eglin Studying Massive 30,000-Pound Bomb
Bomb Would Be 40 Percent Bigger Than MOAB

POSTED: 1:01 pm EST November 8, 2004
UPDATED: 1:13 pm EST November 8, 2004
EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- The Air Force built a weapon so big it was nicknamed "Mother of All Bombs" on the eve of the war with Iraq, but MOAB would be dwarfed by a much larger munition now under study.

The proposed Massive Ordnance Penetrator, or MOP, would weigh 30,000 pounds, nearly 40 percent more than the 21,000 pound MOAB -- officially Massive Ordnance Air Blast -- that never saw combat.

"The reason it's heavier than MOAB is that it has to penetrate a target," said Fred Davis, technical director for assessment and demonstrations at the Air Force Research Laboratory's Munitions Directorate.

MOP would be designed to explode deep in the ground or inside a structure to destroy tunnels and bunkers or topple tall buildings.

MOAB, on the other hand, explodes just above the ground. It is a larger version of the BLU-84 "Daisy Cutter" that was used during the Vietnam War to blast out helicopter landing zones in jungle areas.

The 15,000-pound Daisy Cutter also was dropped during the 1991 Persian Gulf War to clear minefields and more recently to blast caves believed to be hiding terrorists in Afghanistan.

MOAB can be against similar targets and structures or vehicles susceptible to surface blast damage. Both also are seen as psychological weapons that can demoralize an enemy.

During the next 16 months the Munitions Directorate at this Florida Panhandle base will look at everything from MOP's shape to its guidance. The Pentagon's Defense Threat Reduction Agency is providing $500,000 in initial research money.

If the project gets beyond the initial research and development phase, MOP probably won't see its first armed drop until 2006 or later.

MOP would have inertial and satellite guidance, just like MOAB, but it would have a more slender shape so it could be dropped from high altitude by a B-52 or a B-2 stealth bomber.

The Daisy Cutter and MOAB are too bulky to be carried by sleek bombers and must be pushed out of the rear door of lower-flying and slower cargo planes.

At no size. It does not matter how much damage a weapon does as long as it is not a nuclear weapon.

OMG! The Hiroshima nuke was ~15k tons, this would have the same destructive force if it really has 30000 lbs of explosives.

Check your math again... not even close

15kt nuke has same destructive force as 15,000 metric tons of TNT.

If this 30,000 lb has a yield of 30k lb (which I'm not sure if the actual weight of conventional bombs translate directly to actual yields, but for arguments sake lets say it is 30k lbs) then it would be a little over 13.5 ton yield.

See the difference

Hiroshima nuke = 15,000 metric tons of TNT
This new "enhanced" MOAB = 13.5 metric tons of TNT

Hiroshima nuke is still 1000X stronger

I think you were getting kt (Kilotons) mixed up with lb (pounds)

Hope it's ok to resurrect this thread but since one already existed I figured I should add to it.

The Massive Ordnance Penetrator is here folks. From previous posts it looks like it's been in development for at least the past 10 years. And it has been worth the wait.

There's no footage of the GBU-57 but it is about 10 times more powerful than the BLU-109 pictured here.

It would be used against Iran's Fordow site in the event of there not being an agreement.

In the event that negotiations fail, the US is in a position to launch a series of MOP strikes against Fordow, a once secret nuclear facility contained within a hollowed-out mountain and specially hardened against aerial attack. The centrifuges at Fordow are capable of enriching uranium, which could be used for a nuclear weapon. Destroying Fordow would be a difficult endeavor despite the size and sheer force of the MOP. Politico notes that the total destruction of the facility would likely require multiple B-2s dropping MOPs at the same GPS-designated location to ensure that the bombs would be able to drill through both the side of the mountain and the facility's hardened shell before detonating.

The MOP is the world's largest nonnuclear weapon. Designed to hit hardened targets, bunkers, and locations deep under ground, the MOP hits the ground at supersonic speed after being released from a B-2 bomber. After impact, the bomb can burrow through 200 feet of earth and 60 feet of concrete before detonating.

We should be worried about feeding the poor.

Oh well. I guess we can always drop one of these bombs on our cities and start from scratch.

For killing civilians you probably want to go with the GBU-43 or MOAB - lovingly nickname the Mother Of All Bombs. It's predecessor the BLU-82 was used in Iraq and people thought that they were tactical nukes.

In a way, we are. There would be a lot of hungry, radiated people in certain parts of the Middle East if Iran obtained and used a nuke.

That's what I tell myself to feel good about being the best at killing in the entire world anyway.

America, fuck yeah!!

We're still like 30th in the world in education and dead last in infant mortality, but we keep building our lead in death from above. Play to your strengths.

From the link, " After impact, the bomb can burrow through 200 feet of earth and 60 feet of concrete before detonating."

Yikes, and they would need multiple hits to try and take out this facility. Meanwhile Russia has entered the fray by offering to sell Iran an advanced air-defense system capable of hitting targets 93 miles away and as high as 90,000 feet, link.

Got your math a bit backwards there bud. 30,000 lbs is 13.6 metric tonnes.
The bomb's gross weight does not equal its explosive force either.

The MOAB for example has an explosive force of 11 ton of TNT. So if the MOP scales up evenly, it would explode with the equivalent of 15 tons.

For comparison, the largest conventional bomb from WWII, the British Grand Slam, weighed 22,000lbs and exploded with the force of 6.5 tons TNT.
