Air Flights Tickets and Weights

Forgive this stupid question, but why is it politically incorrect to pay for an airflight by weight + seat cost rather than purely seat (same as luggage). Shouldn't costs be transparent, fatties get pay more, small kids pay less. etc...

Because fatties would riot then eat all the peanuts on the plane.

Also they would have to provide better seats then for the fatties if they charge more.

Wouldn't this be good? No more sitting beside fatties w/ their stomachs bulging out of their seats?

While there is no doubt Americans have gotten bigger, there is also no doubt that airline seating has gotten smaller. Airlines provide a service (flying) to customers. We are the only first world country on the planet without a viable train system to provide competition within the borders. The way things are going, I believe all of the national airlines will go belly up and we'll be left with a hash of small regional airlines.

Even w/ high speed train, LA <-> NYC (probably one of the most popular routes?) still requires jets, never mind international etc..

But I agree, we need some high speed trains (see California), but unfortunately, when Americans build trains they cost 1000x more than the Australians and Taiwanese or Japanese...

I don't see rail being a viable alternative. Doing some quick research it looks like a New York to LA maglev system would travel at 300+ mph and even with a few stops could probably do it in 10 hours.
The problem is the cost: Judging from the cost of other projects it seems such a project would cost around $275 billion dollars to build.

Airbus A380 costs about $320mil x 10 of them = $3.2 billion. 4 flights each way a day at ~$3mil.
It would take 248 years to equal the cost of building a coast to coast maglev train.

Unless there is some magic way to build it for WAY less, high speed coast to coast rail will never happen.

I think cost is an important factor, but also think about all the redtape you have to go through, getting land for right of way (e.g., all the negotiation w/ the farmers), environmental concerns (e.g., EPA), and lots of bickering, which path should the train take? the fastest path? or the path that stops by nearby cities? which cities gets the luxury of a stop over and which don't (e.g., see California)?

This is a great idea.

But since my fat ass is paying more, I want more room. I'll let you pick which sweaty, cyst riddled fat roll I plop down on 1/3 of your seat. :|
