Air filter to stick inside of air vent?

My house has forced air and in the basement everything gets caked with a layer of dust that's almost impossible to keep up with.

Are there any filters that you can stick inside the air vents to prevent the dust from coming through?

I hope you already have a filter at the intake? Installing filters at the outlet vents would result in the dust accumulating there and impeding the airflow, which can't be good for your AC. Still, if you insist, I suppose you could buy the kind of furnace filter that can be cut to size.

I recall seeing register filters at Home Depot recently. Not sure if it would greatly affect airflow or not.

Might be worth while to check into duct cleaning too. I know I've got a nice layer of dust in my ducts that I would eventually like to have cleaned out.

There is a filter at the intake and we just had our ducts cleaned out this spring.

I honestly have no idea where all the dust is coming from...

Just a wild guess, but could the dust be caused by a hole in the ducting leading to the basement?

That's my guess too.

1. You've eliminated dust in the ducts.
2. You have a filter (changed regularly?) at the intake.
3. Dust has to come from somewhere. Are you sure it's coming from the vents in the basement? If it's only dusty in the basement, but nowhere else, maybe there's another dust source.

Yeah, my question is why is the basement dusty?

Clothes dryer? If so, something is wrong.

I eliminated a lot of dust in my basement by having a dedicated garbage can with a lid just for the lint that came out of the dryer. I found that everytime someone threw something in the trash can the lint from the dryer put out a cloud of lint/dust if there was some in there.

What my mom did, for awhile (she eventually had the ducts vacuumed out), is use cheesecloth behind the vents.

It seemed to help... but I really don't remember too much about it, other than she did it.
