I need to build 2 work PCs ..I can not WC them...

so I have been out of the loop on air cooling..so I need to know what would be the better choice
Tunig Tower vs Ultra 120 extreme

to overclock e6420 or e6600 with no more tha n1.5v(preferable 1.45..with hope for 3200-3400)

I have read some info in threads here on the lack of a well lapped ultra 120e and mounting issues

TIA

Either one will work fine, it is just a matter of what you can find these days. With the recent C2D price drops, everyone is sold out of both! For the money, the Tuniq Tower is about $10 cheaper with a fan included and will keep you within a couple degrees of the Ultra-120extreme.

I have a u120x that'll do 55c Orthos @ 3.4Ghz on a 6420 without lapping a thing. This is inside a P182 with all fans set to low and a Scythe fan (ripped from the Ninja) on mobo automatic control and a passive 7950GT @612Mhz in the box too.

Tuniq:
Pros.
Less expensive
Included adjustable fan
Will fit more cases

Cons
More difficult to install
BIG look (could be a pro if you like it)

Thermalright:
Pros
Two fans possible (only clips for one)
Easier to install
Better performance (Anand has 4-5 degrees better)
Small look (could be a con)

Cons
Expensive!
No fan included
Very tall. Will not fit some cases including popular TT cases

I've said comparing the two coolers is like comparing a Ferrari to a Porsche. In the end it's going to come down to style because both will probably have more performance than you can tap into. TR may give you one or two degrees on the Tuniq, but at a cost of $20+ more including the fan. Regarding the lapping, I'd take that w/ a grain of salt. I've been following those threads as well, but I haven't seen anyone post that an unlapped TR, regardless of how the finish looked out of the box, has not performed as advertised.

Oh, and both are out of stock everywhere. So you'll have plenty of time to think things over 🙂

thanks very nice summary

Any idea what the dimensions off the mobo socket are to determine if the case will fit the Ultra 120 extreme
I bought this and will remove the stupid cpu duct

ahahahahahahaha neal i know your tempted to tho.

umm... can i ask how much you intend to overclock? if this work PC is for budget, id say just get a scythe ninja, or a freezer64.

You dont need to push uber overclocks on it, if its for work. Well if you work in a cyber cafe, that would be a different story.

EDIT:
3200-3400

okey i see, that kind of oc would require at least a Vcore Actual: of 1.33-1.35

1.37V actual is about the requirements for 3.6ghz on 80% of the processors ive seen. THATS IF your chip can go that high.

So i would assume your bios voltage, on a P965 (heck of a lot less vdroop then my 680i) would need MAX 1.4V to run that setting. Not bad.

@ 1.4V the chip will put out about 121W TDP. So at 3.2-3.4 im guessing around 89-90W TDP cooling required if stock is 65W TDP.

I think you can figure out the rest from their.

Id say save your budget, get 2 regular ultra120's. Their kinda hard to be at 46 dollars a pop.

OC will always depend on what the chip can do and temps...
HMM cooling will be important but maybe the Ultra12o is the way to go

thanks

I wish I could WC...actually safest IMHO but too costly for my offices and since other docs may use them there is a risk of issues
