Air conditioning still not fixed after 3 visits to get it repaired

My brother recently left his '95 Civic with us (he didn't need it anymore...Actually, it was my families car to begin with, he just took it for college), and I started driving it.

I noticed that the AC wasn't working properly on it. It eventually NEVER worked...well, sometimes. You'd have to hope and press buttons at random, and THEN it might work (like magic).

If it ever did work, it would stop working if you stopped and restarted the car. Sometimes it would just stop working anyways.

So, we took it in. They figured it just needed charged, or whatever. Something typical.

They claimed they tested, and they claimed it worked.

I got it back, and the AC was still hot, still not working (even after many minutes of driving).

So, we took it back. They examined it, tested it, and said it was working. WTF? Then they told my dad "If you have it set like this, it works". My dad later told me, "You'd think they'd figure I know how to work the AC on a car we've had for 13 years..."

We took it back for a third time. We told them that the air would run as if the AC button was not pressed in (though it is, and it lights up to show it). We told them that we had to press random buttons to get it to work. We told them it would work at random. We told them it would shut off randomly, even if it was going perfectly (rare) for maybe 10 minutes.

They figured it out. Something was wearing down, some sort of connector, and if disconnected, the AC would stop working. Usually, because it was so weak, it would disconnect and cause the problem. Apparently they fixed it and tested it...apparently it worked. They "drove it around, turning the AC on and off to test it".

I got it back. I noticed a SLIGHT improvement. The AC will now randomly work more often than before (but usually not, still). It generally works in the morning or at night...Actually, it usually works (well, more often than any other time, it still sucks though) anytime before 4:30pm, which happens to be the time I go to work (which sucks).

Just a couple days ago I was driving to Petsmart. It was about a 20 minute drive. Surprisingly, the AC worked wonderfully! I only had to wait a couple minutes for it to get cool after starting the car.

Then, randomly, it's as if the car's AC shut off to the snap of a finger. It didn't change the sound, and it didn't instantly get hot...but you could feel the coolness instantly go away. It was stuffy within just a couple seconds in the car.

I really wish I knew what was wrong with it, and I really wish it had been fixed after 3 visits to the shop.

Aside from this being a rant, would anyone have any idea what it could be?

We're going to take it elsewhere to "get it fixed" soon.

Honda>> AC suddenly cuts out and gets hot >> bad low pressure switch

A common problem with Honda AC systems. Easy/cheap to fix!

Hope that is what is wrong.

Perhaps. I imagine it could be a combination of things, but I'll remember that for whenever we take it in. Thanks!

Oh, I guess the 3rd time we took in it to repair it they fixed that (or so they say). I think that was the thing that wasn't working...what I sort of mentioned in my original post (I really have no clue about AC and stuff...I have a very, very n00bish understanding of cars).

What else could it be?

Also, sometimes when the AC is "working", the air isn't nearly as cold as it can be...it's just barely enough to cool you, so you know it's working, but it doesn't help knowing that it is supposed to be very cold.
