Air Conditioner Problem...

I have a window unit that has been off for, probably, the last 6-7 months. I turned it on today, and man, it reeks! Is there any way for me to clean it out, or put something in it, or anything anyone can recommend?

Hmmm...your idea intrigues me...I didn't even think of that. 😱 I'm guessing that's the large, rectangular area on the front of the a/c unit, with the vents on it?

Yes, there should be a removable foam filter behind the grille.

A lot of the smells are caused by mildew and other moist-air growths. Suggestion: when shutting down the AC unit after use, first turn it down to air only for a bit. This will let the ducting dry out before you shut it off. (Also a good idea for car AC) 😉

Okay. I just opened the grill, and it feels a little weird taking that part out...but I guess it's okay. I'll try that now. Thanks for the responses, guys!

Yea, we finally cleaned our POS apartment issued air conditioner a few weeks ago. I'm sure it was the first time it was ever done..was rancid. But now the A/C shoots well across the room, so it was worth it. Just had to bathe the whole filter/grill assembly and vacuum the box as best we could.

I would suggest taking it apart and giving it a real cleaning. Take it out of the window and pull the cover off. You should be able to clean all the ducts and the fan then.
