Just moved into a new home and tried to just slide my ac into a precut. Ac sleeve here (fedders). The ac is quite a bit smaller then the precut opening And I'm wondering what to do. I should google but I only have net access on my phone, and the staff at my home depot barely speaks English so I doubt they'd be of much help.

Thanks!

edit: the photos are examples (and one of six, currently vacant) - i didn't install an ac into the box without removing the back opening.. that would be silly! and dangerous

I have no idea how to host iPhone pics from the phone itself, but let's say the sleeve is 6" vertical too big and 4" horiZontal, which can. Be fixed with the spreaders. I tried temporarily filling the gap with a towel and that caused the ac to overheat in a weird way

you mean 6feet by 4feet? Thats a huge hole in your wall!

I take it, your talking about a box air con unit (somtimes called window units) or are you talking about a weatherwall unit? I really do need pics to be able to help

If so can you take a pic of outside?

The entire whole is maybe 2.5 feet x 1.75 feet. The excess, depending on the ac, is a few inches each side. To pit it in perspective,my beast of an ac 24,000 btu unit was about an inch too big while my smallest 5000 btu one has an 8 inch or so gap all around. We did a window install on the huge one, btw

can you speak english please, and use metric system
how big is the room in meterssquared and what are the sizes of the units in kilowatts?

Ok i understand.

If you want to use the big unit, you will need to cut the hole in the wall larger by the required size.

If you want to use the small unit, you will need to use ply wood to cut the fill and use no more gaps or something

ok, so the space is there for a box unit.

Ok, you will need to either expand the hole for the bigger unit. This will require more work.

if you choose to use the smaller unit, you will need to fill the gap

Whichever choice, make sure it is well secured, i have seen window ac units being used as robbery break in points.

If you are going to use the smaller unit you need to remove the box from the hole. The box is going to keep the output air from the condenser blocked so it will keep recycling hot air. This is the reason you are overheating. The box was made for a unit with the intake and the exhaust in the back of the unit. Almost all the window units I have seen have the exhaust air coming out of the sides or top. You need to remove the box and take a piece of plywood for the top of the unit to mount to. Then just spread out the things on the sides to fill in the sides or use more plywood.

Let's try to fix your pics first...

INSIDE

OUTSIDE

The second pic...Is the "Fedders sign" covering the opening?

If the opening is too big for the unit, you'll have to close the gaps in such a way that the unit can't easily be removed for burglar access...OR, buy an AC unit that actually fits the hole properly.

I didn't see the outside pic before. What is that a bay window above the hole? You definitely need to remove the feeders sign thats why your overheating. Your still going to have problems with your unit recycling the hot air.

No kidding. I presumed that the OP had just put the sign back over the opening when he wasn't able to get the unit working right. If he had tried to run the unit with that sign over the hole... HOPEFULLY he isn't THAT fucking stupid.

Hi all,

Thanks so much for the posts - that was an example photo of one of the 1/2 dozen boxes. Yes, I removed the fedders sign and the unit has the overheating problems. i think it's just that the opening is so huge vs the tinyness of the unit (I temporarily taped up around the unit until I have time to cut out some plywood.

edit: the huge unit was professionally installed and works perfectly (and the line converted by a licensed electrician), it's just my 3 other acs (which are all 5 to 8,000 btu).

You would be surprised at some of the stupid things I have seen people do. The worst that comes to mind is someone hooking his flu pipe on a furnace to a register in his basement. He didn't want all that extra heat going outside. Leaving a cover over the hole trying to run an ac wouldn't surprise me one bit.

Just put it in, then fill the "space" with expanding foam. they make it especially for a/c installs...check your local big box home improvement store...
