I just browsed to a news snippet on engadget about this so I had to go an have a look online for it, and amazingly enough it was real, and it was just under $260!

LINK

I'm not sure about the quality of this product and will have to have a look when I get it, but I'd say that the specs look good. 1280x720 at 30fps in H.264. Uses SD memory instead of tapes, and gets up to 4 hours out of an 8gb card (IIRC from engadget).

Hot or not? You decide!

EDIT: Haha, stupid me forgot to link it.

So 720p recording for 4 hours for only $340 + shipping? Sounds pretty good to me. The nearest competitor to the camera as I can see is a Sanyo at $599.

price seems pretty good, but if you plan on editing the video make sure you have something which can deal with hd mov files, also eiditing in any compressed format almost always requires recompression which lowers quality. THis will probably be better then an old vhs-c camcorder but not comparable with a dv cam. As long as you aren't expecting to to compare with blue-ray/hd-dvd or 720 over cable you should be ok, but for the price it cant be that good.

At least Aiptek is showing progress.
Their previous "camcorders" in this form factor had no optical zoom.
The similarity to my Xacti caused folks to think mine was an Aiptek $79 POS.

I love my Xacti, except its dismal low-light capabilities.
