I'm building a new system when the coffee lake cpus come out. I am pretty set on all my parts except the cooler.

I plan on using the define r5 as I have my 2600k system in the r3 and I really like it.

I'm hoping to get a better cooler than the h60 I used in the sandy bridge.

I think I will buy all my parts and put it together and just measure and see what will actually fit. Then buy the cooler last.

Anyone have any thought on cooling in the r5? Is there another case I should consider? What's it like having a radiator up top?, I could fit the 280 up there but concerned about noise level. Thanks for any advice. . Dave

I can't be sure about the Coffee Lake in regards to my own approach -- which may or may not float your boat -- so to speak.

I jettisoned the idea of a "custom-AIO" such as those made by Swiftech and EKWB at the last moment, after preparing my case to install either of them. I discovered an air-cooler that performs short of the EKWB Predator by 5C. I paid $50 to Silicon Lottery to de-lid my Skylake processor and reinstall the heat-spreader with CLU. That resulted in a reduction of 12C. I have looked at Silly-Lott's web-site recently, and I think they're delidding Kaby Lake CPUs -- what-a-minute . . . Yes,, they are.

If you're stuck on using AiO coolers, maybe you were very happy with the H60 and that tempers your preference. I'll only say I got the cooling I wanted and needed to run my Skylake at 4.7 Ghz -- as cool as you'd want unless you're an absolute fanatic about clocks and temperatures. And it's quiet. I guess the factor to consider would involve whether or not you can fit the right cooler into your desired case. You wouldn't have much trouble fitting my cooler inside the R5, though.

Thanks for the reply. I understand your point too. But I am pretty decided on the AIO though. I did like the h60 I used previously I ran it in push pull with two akassa fans and it was quiet on the rear of the case. I'm wondering if I want a cooler up top. I think I'm going to go ahead and buy the case - I already have a new rm 650i psu. I'll be able to actually measure the bottom and front options. I'd like a Corsair but might go with an Artic instead. Dave

I have a Deep Cool Captain 240EX on this current build. I have a new Cooler Master Iiquid cool 280 in the box waiting for probably a 8700K. The liquid coolers are all very similar. Find one for a good price and you should be good. At least 240mm maybe 280mm.

thanks.....OK I think I may just go with the h110i v2. I see in the reviews it only has wiring for two fans. It has mounting holes on both sides so I know you could set it up push-pull. But can you attach a Y connector to each lead and how would the Cosair link software work? Anyone try this? thanks

Also I have a Cooler Master liquid cool 240mm with my Ryzen R3 1200 build. I would suggest whatever AIO you get, make sure it's 240mm or more and you should be fine.

thanks. Yeah, waiting around for my cpu to arrive I've had lots of time ask questions, watch youtube videos etc. So I think I've come around to the h115 now as it will fit in front, or up top. I think I can probably get 140mm fans to run quieter. I upgraded the fans on my previous aio and l probably will again.
