Is it ATX?
In my own (somewhat limited) experience looking inside Dell boxes, it seems that a majority of them are non-standard, same as Compaq, Dell, HP, IBM, et al, and thus difficult to work with. Gateway, on the other hand, often uses ATX parts, or at least very close to ATX, so you can do a work-around.
I have an oldie I acquired that is one of the better-looking of boxes in the standard putty color. Nothing much inside is worth keeping {P-II/233, no AGP, not even SDRAM slots -- RAM was the 72-pin stuff (EDO?), psu is 200 Watts}, other than a CD-ROM and a floppy. It is half again heavier (or more) than a typical White Box steel box, being made Dell- style from thick plastic.
The one oddity is that the i/o shield on the back panel isn't a normal rectangular piece, and it's not a snap-in. It includes the upper portion of the top backplane slot's cage, and it is riveted into place. I will have to cut the piece off where a normal i/o shield would end before drilling out the rivets, assuming I proceed with a project involving it.
I have a sister, who is not only a technical know-nothing, she also has been afflicted with an adult form of something much like ADD most of her life. She finds it difficult to concentrate and learn a new skill in anything like a normal amount of time investment. I've given her a PC, and she is letting it collect dust. I'm thinking that if I make it "look good" in feminine eyes, maybe it will help with motivation (she wants to keep working past retirement age, and will soon find the "Greeter" jobs at Wal-Mart are about the only thing that doesn't have a computer around doing something or other).
I was thinking a pastel coloring job, on monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. There's been an article about refinishing in a recent magazine (CPU or Maximum), but the colors chosen weren't "feminine"; as if I really knew what was and wasn't a feminine color!
Of course, I need input from a woman with less of a tech-negative attitude, and I'm not really sure where to find one. At my age, most of the women I know are happily staying at home now, entertaining the grandkids. They don't surf the internet, and while many had used PC's for work, none ever touched one at home. Where do any "Senior Age" geek type women hang out, I wonder?
IS that some kind of Oxymoron?
Geez, is this off-topic or what!
