Why the hell do people sign on and then put their away message up immediately? Does being away for over 5 hours make you cool or something? It really burns my balls when people load up AIM and immediately go away. Its different if you're going to be back in a few minutes, but some people keep it up for hours at a time. Whats the big deal with signing off or exiting?

I wish I had so few worries in my life that other people's AIM use was #1. :)

Because 8 of my buddies are on and 7 of them have away messages running. And 3 of them have had them up for 15 hours.

some people are expecting others to leave them a message in case they need him/her.

My AIM is signed on all the time. I have a cable modem and am always running some program (ftp client, seti(used to), mIRC, and Kazaa. So why not leave it up and running?

I leave AIM on so that my friends can leave messages instead of sending e-mail. Most of the time they leave me links and quick little blurbs.

I just leave mine away...that way if I don't feel like talking to someone, its easier just to ignore them :)

Why not? If I didn't use a ThinkPad for my main computer it would be on all the time. No real reason to shut down AIM/Trillian/whatever all the time. The computer doesn't really care.

I leave my aim on all the time because I have cable... and i like to let me people leave me messages and stuff... longest i've ever left it on was a bit over 15 days i think....
at one point the other day, 26 out of the 29 buddies online had away messages... pretty disturbing

Well, I find that people are usually entertained by away messages, so instead of signing off, I'd rather put up an away, even if it is for a long time.

As for why people put up aways right after signing on...I usually sign on when I get home from work, just to see what everyone is up to, but I'm busy running around the house, so I end up putting my away up. I definitely think that is better than getting on and then not replying when someone IMs you (like people who don't put up aways but also don't show that they are idol...)

Anyway, I think aways are fun. :D

same here, except i don't even idle anymore. if i want to talk to you i'll IM you, and just because i got back from idling doesn't mean i feel like starting dumb conversation.

Basically, it got to the point where i'd come back off away and people would IM me right then, and if I'd come back off of idle people would IM me and if i didn't respond it'd be a.. "i know you're there!" kinda thing. :|

You know what I hate? People who are on AIM all the time and IM you the second you come back or sign on. Hrmmm...remind me not to put you on there.

I turn off the option that lets other see when I'm idle, so I appear online all the time.
I don't need other people to know when I'm at my computer or not.
If they really want to be sure of getting a hold of me they can use the magical device called a telephone.

I did that for a while, but everyone got pissed off at me and I finally gave up.

It's nice to only talk to who you want to though
