okay so.. recently I got verizon fios and they set me up with an Actiontec MI424WR. He installed one computer and I dragged a wired line upstairs and plugged it into the other one. Both plugged into the router and worked fine. Then I got sick of this routers firewall.. not being able to turn it off and having to port forward everything and even when I port Forwarded some stuff still did not even work. I then wanted to switch both comps to an ethernet switch with no firewall inside and just run firewalls seperate on both comps. It seems like I get a lot of limited or no connectivity messages when I put both comps into the switch.

For the computer I am on now I had to plug it into the wall then plug it back into the switch for it to work. My other computer tho does not work at all... not even plugged into the jack itself, it only works with the router. Is there anyway I can get the other computer to work in the ethernet switch? I tried going into cmd and typing ipconfig /renew but it still don't work. Tried removing the ethernet card in device manager but it won't work.. tried repairing but thats a no go also. If there is no way then does anyone know of any routers online with no firewalls inside so I don't have to port forward?

unless your ISP allows separate IP addresses (most don't, but I'm unfamiliar with FTTP) you will have to run the computers through a router or DHCP server.

Your one computer works because it grabbed the available IP address, leaving your other one out.

okay.. roadrunner worked with a switch with both computers plugged in.. don't know why this one wont. Do you know any routers with a firewall that I can disable.. or one without.. If one does have a firewall I would want one with a disable option or something so I can turn it off so I don't have any problems with a lot of my programs etc. With actiontec I had to port forward a lot of stuff and I couldnt completely turn it off either...

Also roadrunner worked with both computers on an ethernet switch.. don't know why this one wont.

Also.. one other question. How come one computer works when its plugged straight into the jack but the other one doesnt?

Hmmm... I do not know why but the red key opens my Ford car, but it does not open my Volvo.

The pages below were written a while ago. Ignore the prices and the Hardware recommendations, stick to the principles.[/i]

Most routers have a DMZ which you can enter a single IP address to be placed "outside the router" all other devices connected will function through the router, but the device placed in the DMZ bypasses it.

you said if you plug in one computer into the wall, it works, but the other one doesnt, even after release/renew?

Your ISP doesn't limit to a specific MAC address does it?

Not sure.. I just got this ISP so i'm new with fios. I been using roadrunner all these years. Can you reccomend me a good router without much problems with the firewall and I don't have to port forward nearly every program? Bittorrent ran slow on this actiontec and when I hosted a shoutcast server it did not work at all... even after I forwarded the ports. It worked on the hub tho. soo... is linksys good? or do you know of any router that I can order that wont give me any problems? or maybe one where I can disable the firewall completely and don't have to port forward? thanks.

FIOS residential require you to connect via ppoe, so using a switch alone will not work.
You need to use a router; if you dont like the router that fios came with, go get another popular router.

Whats a DMZ option? to turn off the firewall? Also.. does the wired one work the same/have the same options? I don't really need wireless....

Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) allows one IP Address (computer) to be exposed to the Internet. Some applications require multiple TCP/IP ports to be open. It is recommended that you set your computer with a static IP if you want to use DMZ. Linksys describes it as "...The DMZ Host setting allows one local user to be exposed to the Internet to use a special-purpose service such as Internet gaming or Video-conferencing".

Okay.. I got that router you were talking about.. the linksys one. Now I tried hosting a shoutcast server and a friend wasnt able to connect to my page. Is there anyway I can disable the firewall completely or put it the same as say.. a switch?

okay.. I figured out my real ip from whatsmyip.com. It did not show my real IP through network connections... now my problem is when I stream shoutcast my net download drops so damn low its at like 300kb down on a speed test.. any idea why that is happening? didnt do this with a switch.

edit: my connection only drops to low when someone connects to my shoutcast server.

edit 2: k.. got shoutcast to work correctly... now on to the next problem.

This is for aim direct connection and file transfer... didn't test talk yet. It seems like I need to port TRIGGER ports for aim for this to even work. If I don't port trigger the weird thing is my buddy can direct connect to me but I can't with him. It also seems like DMZ enabled with dhcp disabled didn't do a thing to help this out. Skype file transfers work fine but AIM doesn't... weird eh?. Now to my main problem, after I port trigger 5190.. direct connect and file transfers work BUT after about 30 minutes AIM cancels the direct connect/file transfers and gives me a firewall error saying you or your buddy is behind a firewall blah blah you should tweak the settings etc... any idea how I can fix this? also... it seems like DMZ doesn't work for AIM, why is that? it suppose to open all ports...

Also.. to enable DMZ what do I have to do? maybe I was doing it wrong.. there are currently 2 computers on my network connected to this router. The last digits of my IP under network connections is .100. Now.. I go into the router's control panel and enable DMZ then type in 100 in the box.. then I disable DHCP and click save.. correct? do I need to do anything with the other comp thats connected to the router? How can I enable DMZ for both comps if theres only 1 box under application and gaming > DMZ ?

The connection with *** was not successful.
Make sure that your Buddy is using the latest version of AIM.
Changing your settings in the Firewall preference may help.
Also both you and your Buddy may need to adjust the settings of the firewall software on your individual networks.

^^ thats the AIM error I get.
