AIM connect, browsers do not!!!! Weird network problem...

For the last 4 weeks I've had a recurring problem. Suddenly my browser stops working. Netscape says "connection refused". Explorer gives the default "no connection" web page. But surprisingly AIM, Yahoo messenger work fine under these conditions. SO do online computer games.
Interestingly as well, when I try to get on my Buy Your Own Access AOL account, it doesn't go past the second stage, which is "checking TCP/IP".

I have a DSL connection from Verizon. I connect through a Hawking router. I reset the router to factory settings and reentered my PPPoE information, as well as the 12 UDP ports that I need open for gaming. I am not running DMZ.

My only way of regaining access to the net is restarting my computer or restarting the router (both work)

Anyone know what I can do about my problem please help!

A quick solution may be to reset your IP settings.

I am not sure of how XP handles this - and you did not specify what OS you are using - but if you run winipcfg.exe (For Win98) and release all and renew all it might fix your problem.

I will have to do some research on the NT based systems. Hopefully someone will step up and fill us in...

Sorry I could not be of more help.

I am using a NIC that is built in to the mobo of a Dell. Not sure how to go about upgrading the drivers for it....

I've had the same thing happen to me and eventually aim and yahoo cuts off. I'm just using resnet in the dorms.

Could be one of several things causing it:

a)spyware/malware/browser hijacks -- get a program like Ad-Aware or Spybot and scan your system

b)temporary DNS issues -- either the fault of your ISP's DNS servers or, more likely the fault of your router. Cheap broadband routers are notorious for losing web and/or internet connectivity because of bugs or defects. Suggest upgrading your router's firmware. Also, try connecting to the Internet directly, ie don't use your router for a while and see what happens. If you don't experience any loss of web connectivity then it's probably your router.

c)virus/trojan -- run a complete Antivirus scan. You should also be using a software firewall.

d)faulty NIC or drivers -- as already suggested, upgrade your NIC drivers
