AIM chain letter.

*sigh* it's sad how foolish people can be...just got this IM from a friend:

Dear AIM users,Because of our overloading of our servers, we are being forced to extract our non-active AIM users. Because this is a free service, AOL has exceeded the budget for the AIM service. We are asking that you send this exact message to 20 other AIM users to ensure us that you're an active AIM user. Our system tracking devise will pick up this message to keep you on our active list. You have 72 hours to complete this task or your service will be cancelled immediately. Starting April 9, 2003, we will be charging a small fee for registering of a screen name for AIM. Thank you for your time and for using AOL or AIM.Sincerely,Mark JenkinsAOL Time Warner

that's it...exact spacing and english. Now, you think that that might be enough of a dead giveaway, but I guess not.

BTW, AIM.com and AOL.com make no mention of this, so I truly assume it to be false.

I can guarantee that it's false, without even needing to research it. This same type of chain letter goes around almost every 6 months to a year. Not the same wording, but the same general idea. Next, someone will start a chain letter saying that if enough people send the message on, AOL won't start charging for AIM. 6 months later, this message will go around again.

I got one of these this afternoon. Just closed the window.

Maybe we should make a forum for fad posts of the week...

😕

I am just commenting on the frequency with which crap like this is posted. Someone else mentioned seeing several so far this week.

haha, awesome, I was hoping someone else had posted this, so I could make sure.

But to people that haven't gotten this, it's spreading through FRIENDS, not like Bots or anything, so chances are you could very well get this.

I got it once, and told him that it was a fake.

Idea: We should REALLY start an AIM Hoax through AT, and see if we can get it spread, and eventually posted on slashdot or something.

That would be awesome.

AOL WOULD NEVER, EVER, START A CHAIN LETTER TO TELL YOU THAT THEY ARE LETTING USERS GO OR THAT YOU HAVE TO FREE UP YOUR BUDDY LIST OR THAT SOME GIRL WITH NO EARS AND NO FACE IS GONNA HAUNT YOU TONIGHT. IT'S FAKE, ALWAYS ASSUME SO.
