A friend tipped me off to emails from my old AOL Instant Messenger, AIM, account sending out emails to her. I had not signed into AIM half a decade and did not realize email was added to my account. I got in with my password and saw the emails. AOL said to do a virus scan on my PC which I have done recently but should do a full one again. I use MS Security Essentials v2 and also Malware Byte's Anti-walware. I also updated the password so hopefully my account is secure. I deleted my AIM contacts so there is no one to spam. I use yahoo for my email and after another friend's account was hacked I deleted my contacts from the cloud to protect family and friends if I ever get hacked.
Assuming the full scans are clean which i expect, how did this happen? Brute force attack on AOL? Or more likely the fact that I use the same username and password for as many logins as I can?
I am currently updating all my passwords to protect myself. What if the hacker starts posting on Anandtech forums in my name, GASP!?
