Aight, what's the deal. EAX failing in classic Unreal

I have a problem. The reverb and other environmental effects of EAX are not working in Unreal.(final patch) Surround sound is still fine, but the effects aren't working. I'm running Windows 2000 with the latest SBlive! drivers. Last night I played coop with a friend who has the same basic setup (Win2k and SBlive!), and his effects worked fine. Help?

Do you have 3d sound in hardware enabled(something like that)?
