AIEEE.... explorer.exe crashes in XP

gopunk

Lifer
whenever i have a folder open, and i right click or if i go to the file menu, explorer.exe crashes and restarts. so as you can probably imagine, this is getting kind of annoying. has anybody even heard of this problem? i couldn't find it in mskb.

any help would be appreciated, thanks. and i already have linux installed, but i'm not interested in making a full transition, so don't post here telling me to use linux. i'm just looking for a solution.

Friend of mine was having this, along with other issues with explorer errors in Xp after he first installed. I took a look in the event viewer to isolate exactly wht was going on , and turns out a bios revision for his board (abit kt7 raid) fixed things up nicely. something about the register configs changing slightly for stability...hope this helps

i started noticing this just a few days ago... don't think i made any changes...

i'm gonna try the bios. thanks

well.... i'm using an asus a7m... i have bios 1004a... the second most recent one. the most recent one, on asus' website is 1005, and the only things asus lists as being different is that it adds athlon xp and morgan cpus.

do you think i need to update it? i'm just kind of hesistant, because i heard that flashing the bios can sometimes make your system worse...

I'd go ahead and update it even though I don't think that's the problem. Just don't unplug your computer while flashing the BIOS.

hmm... haven't updated bios yet, but here's some more info...

so when it crashes, i look to see what's in the error report that's being sent to ms, and at the very bottom, under the heading "Memory Range 105" it says "d:\xpclient\admin\pchealth..." but d:\ has linux on it (which btw, i did install recently, bout 5 days ago)... do you think this could be the problem? i can't see d:\ in my computer or anything, so why would this be in the error report?

also, i think the crash is caused by the "New" function.... because when it crashes, i can still move my mouse over "Arrange Icons By" and see the stuff in that popup menu, but nothing happens when i move my mouse over "New". also, when i'm in a "save as" box, and i click on the icon to make a new folder, explorer also crashes.

anyways, just thought i'd throw more details out there.

Not sure about the Linux thing... I think the problem is with the new menu because it is the very first thing in the file menu. Try downloading X-Setup. Once in X-setup go to Appearance\Files&Folders\"New" Context Menu\Show/Hide Items and hide any junk in there and see if that fixes it.
