UBAI (Reuters) - President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad appeared to indicate that Iran would be prepared to stop high-grade uranium enrichment - a demand of the United States and its allies - if world powers agreed to meet its needs for the fuel.
"From the beginning the Islamic Republic has stated that if European countries provided 20 percent enriched fuel for Iran, it would not enrich to this level," Ahmadinejad stated in comments published on his presidential website.

If true; excellent news to reduce tensions.

This is what has been pushed for by the West for the last few years.

Now if he is hot air or playing poker
In Iran, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Tehran would be prepared to stop enriching uranium to a higher level - a process that could be used to make nuclear arms - if the six powers agreed to meet its needs for the fuel. But it is not clear how much influence Ahmadinejad has over the negotiations and whether his remarks reflect Tehran's position in the talks.
Experts and diplomats said a breakthrough was unlikely at the meeting in Moscow, where the world powers are wary of making concessions that would enable Tehran draw out the talks and give it more time to develop a nuclear weapons capability.

20% enriched? For what?

Highest enrichment US plants can use for commercial power is ~5%

The EU's geopolitical interests in submissive Iran outweighs anything that Ahmadinejad has to say. With the exception of Russia, Iran is the only land bridge between Europe and Asia. Together with the world's #2 natural gas reserves (that EU really needs!), the Iranian "link" is crucial for the EU and China trade. Ahmadinejad's clock is ticking...

Unless you are running stuff by rail, the land bridge is less efficient than the sea routes.

Land bridge may have been valuable between Europe/Africa/Asia back in the ancients; now there is very little trade by land over that type of route.

Personally, I think he's a figurehead for the religious power who occasionally goes off script.

I don't care if Iran gets nuclear weapons. The ones who want the U.S. gov to stop them are those who hate America (as in the American citizenry) and want to bankrupt America (again, as in the American people) through excessive military spending. It sucks a mountain of ass that we won't get a President who won't slash military spending.

Given that you live off the teat of others' work; this is funny.

Neither sea routes nor land routes can totally replace each other, each one has its own advantages and disadvantages. Land routes can be much shorter than sea routes and also faster. Iran is a crucial alternative to Russia in terms of trade routes, even more as a natural gas supplier.

I doubt even he knows his place or authority. He's allowed to do what he wants until he strays too far then has his chain yanked. I wouldn't trust him if he said good morning. In this context hes an annoying distraction.
