Ahhhhhhhh... Seagate

Well, I hope my harddrive worries are over. I have gone through so many harddrives in the past couple of days, that I can safely rank the reliability and ownership satifaction of all the harddrive companies out there.

3 weeks ago, my western digital caviar from last year, a 10 gig drive, crapped out. This unit was practically brand new, I was seriously miffed. They definitely get my lowest vote. I also remember a long time ago my dad installed a 400MB drive in the 386 from WD, a lot of swearing was involved the next couple of years. Ive never heard good things about them, I have no idea why they hold so much respect. Screw you WD!

Second two worst has to be Maxtor. Im sorry, but these drives are noisy, fussy, and underperform. I had a 4 gigabyte drive that I bought for myself and a friend of mine. Back then I wasnt too interested in a quiet PC, and it wasnt until the Maxtor died that I realized that annoying brain wave erasing ray came from the HDD. The thing booted when it pleased, and several times the bios wouldnt recognize it (it wasnt the Mobo, I had a 2nd hdd in there too, along with a crapload of other stuff). Maxtor sucks, IMO.

Personally, Ive built many PCs with IBM drives in them. Theyve never let me down. After reading the testimonials here you would think they were the worst drives money can buy, but I disagree. I just wished that they performed better and produced less heat. But this opinion must be taken with a grain of salt, Ive never actually had one in my PERSONAL computer....

I do have a special fondness for my Fujitsu though. Through the years, it been the only part that has managed to traverse several generations of PCs that I have owned (mostly because I wanted to save money wherever I could). The damn thing wouldnt die even when I crammed it into a case that was a tiny glowing oven, complete with 1 case fan in the power supply and 1 cpu fan on an OC'd Pentium II, and enough cabling to blanket Connecticut. It died on me yesterday, at least 10 complete reinstalls later, and having had my sister cart it off one semester in her computer.

But above all, I have to say that Seagate drives take the cake. I've had a Seagate Barracuda 4.3 gig UW SCSI drive that has worked in everything, and is still working flawlessly. I bought this used off someone, and its been my savior ever since. Ive had my critical data stored in it since I got it, done video editing with it, let my sister mash on it for a semester. Its been so solid, often being the only thing working after windows has its way with my data <damn you microsoft>. It hooked into an adaptec 2940UW controller, maybe that has something to do with it. Recently, I bought a 40GB barracuda, this time ATA style, I couldnt afford a U160 SCSI one. I cannot believe the build quality of this part. It literally weighs a ton, and is as solid as a brick, and for good reason, its probably the quietest thing in my PC. Gone are the crunching sounds, the screaming spin (that was so prevalent in my old seagate oddly), and any semblance to any other HD. I am so satisfied with this unit, that I copied my 4gig SCSI drive over and chucked the old one, its the first drive that is faster in every respect to the SCSI Seagate. Its reliability remains to be seen...., but if its anything like my old barracuda, I think I will be quite satisfied.

My recommendation to anyone is to forgo the price points and extra space, and buy a Seagate drive.

Oh, and I dont work for Seagate, though I wish I did.

So basically, the only modern drive you tried is the 40GB Seagate? 😉 Pretty surprising that it's quieter than that 4GB Maxtor...

I've never bought a Seagate drive, but I will someday...

My IBM hard drive in my old IBM Aptiva really did break down though. I think there's some truth to the IBM hdd rumors, hopefully newer IBM drives aren't like the old ones. I'm using an IBM drive in one of my computers anyway though, since they are cheap.

Ill have to admit, spicedaddy does have a point. My own personal drives havent been bleeding edge (until I bought this new seagate), Ive always opted for the cheapest of the brand I wanted.

I think in terms of the maxtor, I can deal with a bassy hum, but a high pitched whine I cant stand. Brain slowly being erased.dd.d......

Ive bought so many of these damn things that I though Id throw in my two cents. Since GBs are so cheap now even I can afford a 40gig drive.

I must concur...my Seagate Barricuda IV, 60GB is running great and quite as a mouse and yes I have bought other modern drives but they can't touch this Seagate.

Having a quick look at my fav online store that's kind enough to publish their RMA numbers on their site(once they sell enough of an item to get enough sampled to give somewhat reliable numbers), this is what I got.
Basically I just picked 4 drives from each manufacturer and avarged the numbers in my head(that is, I may be off by a bit, though not too much, I hope😉).

IBM - 0.65%
Maxtor - 1.75%
Seagate - 1.60%
WD - 1.50%

All of the IBM's were from the 120GXP family, which is also the one they sell the most of(the 80 GB 120GXP is their top selling item according to their site), unfortunately they don't have any 60GXP or 75GXP drives left, so I couldn't include those.
WD had one drive with an RMA rate of almost 4%, while the others all had around or under 1%, which of course brought op their numbers a bit.
Of course this isn't a very scientific way to measure RMA rates, but I just thought I'd do a quick check 🙂

I'd have to say that although we have different reasons we pretty much agree on the order.

The one thing I would change is that I would put Fujisu at the top of the list (meaning the best). This of course is no longer valid considering that they sold out but they still get my vote. The speed is always right up there with the other drives but when it comes to noise and reliability Fujitsu really shines.

Every company has had models that were just horrible (some more than others) so your going to get people who hate the brand based on that. I work at a computer shop and so my opinion is mostly based on personal experience and RMA rates.

Interestingly though a couple of months ago I saw a poll on Windrivers.com for resellers about which brand of HDD had the highest RMA rates. Out of over 3000 responses WD was %75 of the responses with the others fairly evenly sharing the remaining %25. Quantum, before it became Maxtor had a little bit of a lead on the remaining contestants.

The moral of the story is: BACK UP YOUR DATA

Edit: Please, don't say a word.

its ALL anecdotal. you make one of these threads one day, and everyone loves seagate. make one tomorrow, everyone will love WD. there is no rhyme or reason, except that IBM's are crap. thats about it.

Love my IDE Seagate as long as it's not in RAID 0...then it's slow compared to the WD's and IBMers.

Exactly, people have had good and bad results with any brand you care to meantion.I`ve had WD,Quantum,Maxtor,IBM,Fujitsu & never had a drive fail on me yet,but I know it will happen one day.

Yup, except samsung, which has a track record of sucking 😉

Here is a benchmark of my 30mb (yes, MB) drive. I didn't run it on my 400mb western digital which is still also going fine.
edit:just the one benchmark 😉

Exactly. One person's experience is just that - one person's experience. Unless you happen to sell and handle RMAs for as many hard drives as Newegg, you're not going to be able to make a very good judgement.

We don't handle as much as Newegg but we do go through over a hundred a month.
